I sure a lot of you stream internet radio on a fairly regular basis. So, I am putting the word out that a new policy that the boobs in Washington are dreadfully close to adopting promises to effectively shut down internet radio stations as we know it.

Read this:
Save Our Internet Radio

The new policy is based completely on a deception by the Recording industry. Hope this will get your ire up.

It's completely unfair.

Power to the People!!

Write your Congressman (or Congresswoman) about this issue.

Find your Congressperson here

This should not happen. Soap Box

For someone who loves internet radio, and the musical variety that it provides, but isn't exactly hip to the particulars behind this issue, what should I include in my letter to my congressman to sound like I know what I am talking about and not just pointless ranting that will just get thrown away?  (terrible run-on sentence, I know)

Here I am halfway across the globe in a war zone and the only radio I have is over the internet.  If I lost my folkalley.com tomorrow I would be in despair.

Well, that statement looks like a great place to start.
Music is universal.

Write from your heart, from a war zone. You'll do just fine, I'm sure.  Thumbs Up

this isn't an attempt to hijack the thread. I think it fit's quite well. as I understand it, the two sattellite radio stations, XM and Sirius, are trying to merge. that in and of itself is ok. the problem is the "Feds" want them to give up the right to not be under the FCC rule!!! NO FREEDOM OF SPEACH!!!!!!!????????
once again "Uncle Sam" is suspected of sodomy!!!

I have a girlfriend that works at  a small public radio station in Columbia, Missouri, that just gained "stream status" and those folks worked very hard to make that happen. I'm sure many "Mom & Pop" stations have done the same thing.

Now, I can see many public internet radio stations being "exempt", but isn't that just "controlling the media"? Think about it and make sure all your local (non-clear channel) stations have the link posted above, please.

That sounds perfect to me. LOL

Just write them with the reasons why you, as an American, should be allowed to listen to American based internet radio stations.

Where are you?

Cheers

You are the perfect person to write your legislator. This is the best reason yet to make the system more equal and allow the internet radio to continue.

It probably doesn't matter how much you know about the issue, or how articulate your letter is - just be clear about where you stand.  Elected officials know that voters are not usually fully informed about issues that are important to them, but despite this they still need to make them happy, or else they get voted out of office.  The only info the congressperson cares about is the number of letters received in favour/not in favour of any given issue.  They don't have time to read anything you send, so they get their secretaries to keep a tally.

Good luck fighting this one, folks!  I sure would hate to lose all that internet programming.  If it goes badly, you can tell your deejays that they're welcome to broadcast from my place in Canada.
