so in the interest of fairness we listened to some mumford last night. while i would not be disappointed if they were indeed a headliner, i still believe there are much better artist that pb could get for the 40th anniversary.
they really do sound like a top 40 pop band, with a banjo player of course.

The very best thing about the TBF is that the listeners are very receptive and open minded. That is the spirit!

my bet: Rhonda Vincent

bluegrass 2013 artist of the year. plays in Utah on 6/15. Goes back east on 6/23. Her 6/21 is listed as 'tentative' at her website but no details. What a stage for her pipes. playin a lil with Sam on the 40th anniversary. it would be good!

Dream come true for me if that is to be. She sends chills up my spine. Love her voice! I hope that tid bit is fer real

Not sure why the Mumfords are causing such a reaction.

I agree, Oxford_Al - they're a good live band, a new part of the Festivarian family from when they were a band none of us had ever heard of, and a band that garnered a lot of positivity at that first festival they played (but which has turned downhill since they became so popular).

I think the chagrin about them being one of the "unannounced bands who could sell our Red Rocks" is the tone with which the Planet is hinting at who the remaining bands are -- I think there's some worry that PB is hinting at something extraordinary for the fest, while Mumford wouldn't be all that surprising to most of us.

This is getting strong reactions both from people who like them but feel their announcement wouldn't be worth the "hype" so far, and from people who flat out would rather they not be at the fest at all.

Agreed.  I think there's several factors in play:

Because of their popularity, some people are concerned about the attention they bring to the festival and how that may impact (and may have already impacted) ticket availability.

Some genuinely either don't care for them or think "meh" and don't see what all the fuss is about.  I also believe some others let M&S's popularity effect their opinion- in some circles, it's hip to be anti-hipster.

I, for one, welcome our conquering overlords...(sorry, Simpsons reference) and choose not to worry about future consequences.  But then again, I don't think it's realistic to expect the festival's popularity to keep to Goldilocks levels- aka, just right.

I've accepted it and am over it (as M&S being a likely headliner) ... I'm sure some will think of SCI in a similar light (for other reasons) even though I'm way more into them as a headliner.

However, the big difference is that M&S would be here three out of the past four years and they're mostly an arrangement based band - you pretty much get the same happy meal every trip to the golden arches.    Perhaps they'll shuffle the deck a bit more and take some chances on improv, but not holding my breath.

As a headliner I'd rather see them get booked every four to five years.
Not that I'm totally against them, but too much too often makes it stale.

Steep Canyon Rangers just flat out knock my socks off. No Body Knows You is an excellent CD the entire CD is top notch. I would love to see them over and over again.

I spoke with Chris Thile when the Punch Brothers played in Oxford (UK) and he mentioned that he was doing a solo set and intimated that he was opening up the festival.

Wow, that's a great piece of intel.    We'll be very happy if this comes true.

Wow now there's a great thought! So many good tunes came from The Eagles. Timeless and holly crap Batman Jackson never comes up for air. Killer set he did indeed!
Now ya got me all excited and thinking, could that happen?????
