For those of us that have done this for a few years, I have been asked, once again, to explain about the vehicle passes for Town Park.

In a nut shell, unless you have a medical reason, YOU DO NOT NEED A VEHICLE PASS for TOWN PARK CAMPING.

Please sit and have a conversation with yourself re: the words "want" and "need". Now, define the word "luxury", because basically, that's what a vehicle pass is all about if you do not have a medical need for one.

Okay, for the newbies, yes, you have a lot of gear, probably TONS of gear. So does everyone else. Trust me, we do. On Saturday morning, June 11th, you will see vans, pick-up trucks, SUV's large and small, and in particular, a flat bed truck (go CrossRoads!)... FULL OF GEAR!

What does this mean? It means you are like all the rest of us and you'll fit in very nicely in Town Park.

Please, if you seek a vehicle pass because you are bringing in a load, pack a "gear tent" for storage and leave the vehicle passes for the truly needy. It's the Festivarian way, and come June, you too will be a Festivarian!  Thumbs Up

Or in true fashion, bring along a 10x20 canopy, storage lockers, a couple of dressers, a pig (gotta have fresh bacon), 14 rolls of duct dape (Hand OFF, DTM!), every size of tarp you can find, a case of alligator clamps, a case of scotch, a case of tequila, a case of pepto bismol, a case of earplugs, 5 quarters (you may wanna shower sometime), solar panels and inverters, and a towel.

Then you unpack it all, set up a small village inder your 10x20, and you don't need the gear tent.

Oh, and bring an armed guard.  Between Blaze, DTM and the Hillfolk, things can get dicey.

One more thing about the vehicle passes... they are very rare indeed.
There's only 30 vehicle passes for the 1200 camping passes in Town Park.
If you aren't camping in your vehicle then you don't need one, period. Flower

Oh crap.

I still have a great picture from about 17 years ago when I brought our first couch.  A beauty of shimmering gold velour.  It was before they "rehabilitated" the river, and a low water year.  We were able to carry it into the middle of the river and get a picture with us sitting onthe couch and Ajax in the background.

But I'll share our secret:  Watch the Freebox and Alleys in the week before the fest.  Our gorgeous white sectional last year came from the freebox on Monday :-)

the carpet is essential though!  Especially in our bowl, ever since the town dumped all the ankle-breaker rocks in there!

Here's my simple take on WHY YOU DON'T NEED A VEHICLE PASS, even though you think you do.  You might WANT one, but unless you've been before, you might not realize how useless and silly they are for most people.

So, my $0.02...

1.  By the time you get to Town Park, all the vehicle spots will be taken and camping in your van will mean parking in the road and not in a nice, official campground spot.  All the nice spots are tent spots.

2.  Even if you get there really, really early, all the vehicle spots will be still be taken and camping in your van will mean parking in the road and not in a nice, official campground spot.  All the nice spots are tent spots even if you get there really early.

3.  You will not get there early enough to get a vehicle spot ahead of the ABGAT team's arrival unless you are mentally imbalanced, in which case you may qualify for the vehicle pass as a result of your mental handicap.

4.  If you can walk on two feet, get yourself out of bed, and tie your own shoes, you should let someone who isn't as fortunate as you utilize that vehicle pass.

5.  If you are bringing a newborn infant to Telluride, you're nuts to be camped in Town Park for a whole week anyway, with or without a vehicle nearby.  Get yourself a comfy hotel room.  Get yourself some sleep.  Stay warm.  Join the Town Park melee when that kid can walk on two feet, get herself out of bed, and tie her own shoes.

6.  There's plenty of free parking outside of Town Park, so the vehicle pass is really for camping.  Drive in, unload, drive out, park, forget about your car for a few days, festivate madly, rinse, repeat.

huh    So stupid question for our first TP experience......once you unload, do you park in Mtn Village?  And if so, is there a fee?

No fees...no matter where you park.

If you get there early enough you can park in Telluride.  If you get there later you can park in Mtn Village.  After unloading the friendly and helpful staff will direct you where to go.

If you get there on Saturday or Sunday you should be able to park right outside the entrance to town park.

I recommend by Saturday at the latest as I recall by Saturday evening in 2010 that cars were being routed to Mountain Village.

I arrived on Saturday last year for set-up then went back to NM for work, and came back up on Tuesday and as late as Tuesday I still got a parking spot in town, down by Coonskin.

Bevin, you are ruining my whole psychology game of getting as many people as possible to TP by Saturday. Argh!  Wink Thumbs Up
