Just read this on-line....

Due to health circumstances, Doobie Brothers bassist Skylark  will be temporarily absent from the Doobie Brothers’ 2010 tour. Filling in on bass is John Cowan, who many of you may remember was part of the Doobies’ touring lineup in the early 1990s.

Here's a link to the Tour Page...

Well they'll just have to play without a bass, or he'll have to step out onto the balcony of his hotel in Englewood and play really really loud.  Sounds as though somebody didn't do some arithmetic.

Cowan's tour page still has Telluride listed.  It should be interesting to see how they handle this one.

Not much for us to handle at the moment.

Cow is helping out his friends and family in The Doobie Brothers in a time of need, and we fully support him in doing so.

As far as I know...It's still not 100% that he will be needed for the 2nd leg of the tour...so everything is still a bit uncertain in terms of whether or not we'll see John's shining face in T-ride.

Obviously, we'll let you all know ASAP when we find out for certain.

I just can't see Johnny C not being at Telluride. I'm sure he'd be able to work something out with them so he could do both.

Rolleyes No John at TBF?  That would really suck.  I'm glad he got the DB gig,   pickin but still, could be a dealbreaker for me.  He and Sam are who keeps me coming back every year.  I sure hope it works out that he can come, and I hope Shad brings Maggie back again.  She almost stole the show last year!  :dog :dog

Aside from his excellent proven talent, John Cowan has one of the biggest hearts - both for his fans, and his fellow artists - that you will ever find at Planet Bluegrass. Thank you for everything, John. You certainly set the bar very high in terms of fan loyalty. And personally speaking, I owe you one. I am very, very proud to have met John several times since 1975. Peace.

Below was posted here on Festivarian Forum by John Cowan on March 18, 2009...

The John Cowan Band will be performing a special free concert at Rudyard Kipling’s in Louisville, KY this Friday, March 20, 2009 at 10:00pm. This concert is open to all but preference will be given to those people who were originally planning to attend the Bluegrass Hotel Concert at the Galt House that has since been cancelled. The John Cowan Band is delighted to be able to announce that Mr. Curtis Burch will be joining them on stage and the band has extended an invitation to a number of fellow musicians, asking them to join the band and jam. The John Cowan Band wants to extend their gratitude to the fans who made a financial sacrifice and traveled a great distance to participate in what was to have been an historic musical event and to repay that dedication and support in the only manner they can…with great music. Seating is limited so please plan accordingly.

We just got final confirmation today that...indeed, John Cowan will not be able to join us in Telluride this year.

As John describes on his website he is helping out his "old friends" in the Doobie Brothers, filling in for the band's bassist Skylark who is recovering from health problems.  On his website, John thanks the promoters - and festivarians - who have allowed him to help out his friends in need... "It goes without saying that I am extremely grateful for their kindness and generous spirit."  We wish John the best for this summer - we'll certainly miss his voice and musicianship in Telluride, but we fully expect him to be back in Telluride next year.

Replacing the John Cowan Band is a new super-group (featuring former members of Sam Bush Band, Jerry Douglas Band, Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, etc) that has been knocking folks out in Nashville and beyond...

18 South - http://www.myspace.com/18southband

Jon Randall Stewart, Jessi Alexander, Guthrie Trapp, Jimmi Wallace, Mike Bub, Larry Atamanuik, coming together around a great (and rapidly growing) set of songs and a love for playing music together.

Here's a great live video montage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmIbpTrwZSg

Fire up their myspace and listen to the groovy little tune "Telluride."  You'll be hooked right away.  We sure are.
