That I'm afraid is totally up to personal taste ! It depends what you listen to generally Rockin, pop, folk, jazz, blues, soul, classical...
Bluegrass has a bit of all that in it, and each individual artist has chosen to bring out more of one or several of these in their particular style of bluegrass:
Tim O'Brien's fairly recent career has a lot to do with his exploration of the Celtic & Irish roots of bluegrass music
Tony Rice's style of guitar playing brings out the blues in bluegrass I think
Bela Fleck's banjo is highly experimental, skillful and close to jazz in many ways
Alison Krauss recent career has veered towards more mainstream, popular music
Chris Thile's mandolin is in the bit in the same vein as Bela's banjo, but with classical music influences as well
Third Time Out (if they still exist as a band, I don't know) is very much the gospel roots of bluegrass
Peter Rowan carries with him quite a big folk & 60's hippie's music (he had a band, Old & In The Way, with David Grisman and Jerry Garcia , the late lead guitarist of the grateful dead) tradition
The Del McCoury Band are a good example of modern day bluegrass quite close to Bill Monroe's original style
The New Grass Revival were pioneers in the broadening of bluegrass towards the music of their generation, rock, blues, jazz, experimental....
I hope this is a bit of useful insight  :)

This is a great free online radio station that plays the music you tell it what you want to hear. I designed a channel around Yonder Mountain String Band and it is constantly playin some Sam Bush and Tim Obrien as well as Del McCrory, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs and many others

Start with a Bill Monroe anthology and a bit of Jimmy Martin
Get a copy of Steam powered aereoplane - John Hartford
Add a dose of Old and in the way
A quick dash of Acoustic Jerry Garcia
Finish with the excellent New Grass Revival Live in France

Then yu can can start branching out from there, there are many roads to go, and they go by many names, they don't all go the same way, but they get there just the same.

I have a quick question maybe someone will have the answer to.  Does anyone know if Kasey Chambers will be performing with her husband Shane Nicholson?  The lineup page discusses their album, but I would really like to know if he will be with her.  I really hope so, because their cd Rattlin' Bones is quite great.  Any thoughts? Thanks.

Not sure if he wil be with her but Rattlin' Bones is one great tune to listen to> I imagine it as one of those tunes that couldd really get crowd going live.

Ah maybe this is a big left field but...while watching AK on the BBC last week I wondered who in the UK had a comparable voice and was equally as purty.

I dont know if any of you are familiar with Kate Rusby but she stands up pretty well to the comparison.
Shes more English folk than Bluegrass but she is mighty fine.

Go on TBF I dare you to invite her  Flower

Karen Casey use to work with Tim O'Brien (in the Crossing tour with what is one of the greatest touring bands ever) and I love her solo work. Her voice is a strong as Kate's, slightly different style. She's got a unique look, not sure if's "purty".  Still if invited I think a duo with her a Tim on a few songs would be in order.

Aussie songwriting forces Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson have announced they will be performing at Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June in support of their country and bluegrass infused 'Rattlin' Bones' on Sugar Hill Records.  

While both artists have successful solo careers in their native Australia and stateside, the husband and wife duo decided to join forces and create a sparsely produced record that highlights the intertwining of two distinct, yet perfectly harmonized voices in a style honoring their musical roots. The result is 'Rattlin' Bones' - a fourteen song LP featuring nine tracks written collaboratively and the remaining tracks written by either Chambers or Nicholson.
