What did you put in the landfill bin?

Hello Telluride Festivarians,

So, this is somewhat of an odd question but I would love it if you can think back to Telluride and recall what you might have thrown in the landfill bin. 

I've been going through the waste data from Telluride, and want to get a better sense of what type of things end up in the landfill bins. 

Keep an eye on the green section on the website, we should be posting a summary of the waste data from Telluride on there soon.

Ya know Bonnie I have been thinking about this and the only thing that was possibly thrown in the landfill was the condo trash. This trash was seperated however but I can remember wondering if management was gonna recycle...

Plastic,plastic, and plastic.... It was mostly food packaging - produce bags and the like. We also ended up tossing much "normally" reyclable materials due to the confusion of what was recyclable materials or not. It would be such a help to us if you could post the materials appropriate for the recycle bins. We found out on the last day that cardboard was not appropriate 

I know each community has different guidelines for recyclable materials. I just found out last week that bio compostable dishes and utensils are inappropriate for our local green waste stream because the compost facility does not have  the right digester ....

Thanks so much for your suggestion.  For this year's Rocky Grass and Folks Fest, we put what can/can't be recycled, composted up on the website.

As we look at the green section of our  website, it seems it would be very helpful to include a section of what can/ can't be recycled, composted in Telluride.   

Regarding your Cardboard comment, did you have a lot to get rid of?  Is collecting cardboard something we need to offer in the campgrounds?  The only place we currently collect cardboard is within the festival grounds.

Well it is nice to know ahead of time.... But not everyone goes on the web..
and well it is hard to remember that when you are at the festival.

Collecting cardboard and turning it into signs on each bin Very Clearly stating
what is recyclable/ compostable  and yes Trash,

Each Set of dumpsters should be partier friendly. 

I know how limited my scope of brain function is whilst I am Festivatiing
it would help soooo much to have guides on each dumpster...

I agree with the others here Bonnie.....
It would be really easy and very Festivarian friendly to post signs at each dumpster outlining what can and cannot go in them. We are a tribe of 3,000 campers, many of which will not simply Not take the time to look at the website before departure. I always accept that we, as a tribe, are really lazy people. Especially when dealing with smelly garbage

This is especially true at the outlying set of dumpsters by the fenceline which are not staffed by monitors.

Speaking for Run a Muck (if I dare), which is a large camp. Many of our campers do bring gear packed in cardboard boxes which, for one reason or another, WILL end up as garbage before our 10 days are up. It will also end up in a dumpster simply because we want to keep a clean, tight, ship while festivating.

Remember, we are dealing with a bunch of oxygen deprived bunch of hippies overdosed on great music and incredible food. Who wants to decipher which dumpster accepts what rummage....

We are going with the Bins next year to pack all our Chit in next year
We learned a few years ago the Boxes are just a waste they always end up wet

In regards to cardboard,, this year we used big plastic boxes from Target and they were great... reuseable...

I didn't know we couldn't do cardboard. Whoops. Beer 12 packs and 6 packs are things I've been able to recycle for 10 years and did it without thinking; never mind other food packaging.

I threw out broken camp gear this year. Wasn't sure where to put it - air mattress with a big hole, a broken chair.

Other than just small stuff, facial tissues and some plastics. I tried to recycle everything I can, I may have over done it:)

I brought home a discarded chair that just needed to be sewn on one edge, and now it works just fine. Last year we brought home a chair in a bag that had a small inkstain on it, and a BIG umbrella with lights on it that Dan uses to work on cars if it is raining, plus the cast iron stand for it.  We also brought home a cooler that someone was going to discard because they were flying and couldn't take it on the plane, and we brought home some boards that we burned for kindling. 
We got another chair that the aluminum frame was broken, and Dan used the nylon seat and back to make some nifty little campstools that we took to Pagosa. Here's a pic:
