I tried to listen to Jim James for a few weeks, but just couldn’t get into it. So I say, “to each his own.” Musical taste is subjective.

But I also say (reluctantly, and as a first-time TBFer, and at the risk of sounding like a genre purist, which I do not intend), “I sure wish they’d stick with bluegrass and country at TBF.”

Jim James is more “Bluegrass” than Musgraves or Carlile.  Mixing genres is what keeps Bluegrass relevant.  I love some traditional Bluegrass, but four straight days of the same sound borders on torture.  The genius of American music and TBF is blending cultures and ideas while respecting the underlying thread.  Surprised at the Jim James haters.  The guy is as talented, experimental, and inspiring as any American musician in the last twenty years.  IMO

Agreed, Bill! I was scared my comment would be received as “bluegrass purist.” No hatred for JJ from me - maybe I just haven’t experienced the right “hook” yet. Though, admittedly, some of the acts seem to have far less (or no) bluegrass mixed in than I expected.

I Love JJ album Eternally Even. Psychedelic with some good messages. "If you don't speak out we can't hear it". Uniform Clarity raw and catchy. I'm not missing one song of his set!

Adams two Telluride appearances, a major meltdown, and then the dude talked through most of his set in 2016. Telluride would have done much better with Bryan Adams.   At least we could have had a nice sing along from radio songs during our youth!

JJ's song writing off the charts good, and if cuts from his latest Uniform Distortion translate to live performance, as wonderful as Eternally Even, should be a great set to finish off Thursday.

I was there in 2016.  This is what I will never forget.  Ryan Adams had the Infamous Stringdusters and Nicki Bluhm as his band for his Saturday 6-7:30 slot.  Someone in the crowd made a request.  He could have ignored it like most artist do when they have to stick to their setlist but he didn't.  He made a big deal out of it and played the song.  He made it clear the band would not be joining in and would just have to sit there patiently while he played "that effen song" (his words at the time).  It was very unprofessional of him, to say the least, IMO.  He made his point but at what cost?

I would not put Ryan Adams in the same sentence with Jim James. James is a pretty good artist. he may not play bluegrass per se but MMJ is a good band. he has collaborated with people like Elvis Costello and Rhiannon Giddens. He has played quite a few shows for charity.
He will not show up too drunk to play. He has no record of sexually harassing other musicians. IMHO, Ryan Adams should never be invited back to this festival again. Sorry to be so harsh, but that is how I feel.

In pure musical terms, I like the "best of worlds" from Ryan Adams far better than Jim James.  It's not even close for my taste.

But I agree about him being a loose canon and being all over the map.

Having said that, I couldn't agree more that he's got some serious issues that I'd have a very difficult time getting past in a similar, but not quite the same light as "did-somebody-say-fatwah Cat Stevens" (who was rumored to appear at TBF a few years ago, but was then "suddenly" off the radar).  But yeah, barring a genuine mea culpa and more, I have no desire to see him again.
