Did anyone else sense that Sam was trying to be conscious of his words this year on stage re: politics?

Personally, I would've preferred to hear him speak his mind vs. having to witness what appeared to be him keeping it in.  I realize it's not a political platform, but a musician should go where their spirit takes them ... even if it's telling the same joke about "not making me turn this car around".
