Fire Safety and restrictions

So, watching the national and evening news reminds me that, as much of a drag as this is- fire season in the southwest is upon us and it's really bad this year.

San Juan National Forest is on Stage 2 fire restrictions: info in link

If you have them, please include fire extinguishers in your Telluride packing list.  Please leave fireworks at home this year.

Consider the possibility that charcoal use and/or white gas stoves may be prohibited (see link above).

Let's enjoy the box canyon, leave it like we found it and not get trapped in it...

Oh that's an awesome update Ron! I saw that on the news too. The last 2 years we have had 2 fire extinguishers in camp that I know of. I think it would be a good idea if we had more, as well as the other big camps. I think most of the bigger camps have them, if not they should.

And Stage 2, open flame is prohibited unless its pressurized gas. That link even mentioned you can't smoke outside. That's gonna piss off some people

Camp Sunny side up will have a larger fire extinguisher if needed.

At this point the wildfires that are nearby are either close to being under control, or are too far away to be a major concern. 

I would not think the chances of cancellation or evacuation have even been considered at this point, and I wouldn't want  to speculate on the possibilities.

Think positive, and be careful in all you do. We'll be fine.

Does this only apply to the campgrounds (in the forest) or does it apply to the towns of Mountain Village and Telluride as well? May have to get myself one of those pens.... haha.

Also have we had these restrictions before in the last 7 or 8 years? I've missed two in that timeframe, but don't ever remember there being a "No smoking" rule, even the year that the smoke, from the wildfires, came into the canyon and turned the sun red. It will be fine either way, just curious.

No fires, charcoal, etc. have been in force for awhile. I think they used to allow liquid fluid stoves in years past. Everyone I know uses a camp chef style stove hooked to a 20 lb. tank, or the Coleman style that uses those small camping tanks that are unfillable nor reusable. They collect next to the recycle bin by the end of the week.

Not sure if the smoking ban will be enforced.
