So help me understand this....can I just roll up to someones camp with some rice crispy treats and join their picnic? Is it like a pot luck...if you want to join in on the green chile or rumballs or whatever you bring something? just don't want to feel like an idiot.  Cheers

Scooter... please don't pull the rice crispy trick...

At the festival a bunch of big groups set-up elaborate camps in Town Park.  They usually prepare communal meals, and if you are fortunate enough to be hanging around one of these camps chatting with someone come meal-time, you'll most likely be invited to grab a plate.  The big camps are very friendly and typically have a "house band" hanging-out with them.  These camps are where most of the late-night picking goes on, and they plan for and expect crowds.

There are also a number of big social parties in Town Park before and during the festival where everyone is welcome and that include food, drink, bizzar entertainment, and sometimes pickin' circles.  You need not bring a thing other than a happy face.  The folks who put-on these parties do it for free as a gift to the goddess of bluegrass.  If you want to contribute some money or help-out just locate the camp or who is hosting the event and drop-in and volunteer yourself.  Telluride Tom has a Town Park event schedule somewhere within this forum that can be used to figure-out your daily festivating.

For the most part, plan on feeding yourself, but also plan on being fed by others... the "food" will come in many forms... the friendly nods on the way to the port-a-potties, free drinks, toe-jobs, a suprise bite to eat, and hugs just to name a few... (and don't forget about the music).

It's not necessary to bring something... but if you do... make sure I get a little   Angel

Oh Dear...

Monkeygirl the Famed Kaptain Hunter made too much noise and frightened the Kaptain away!

I think what I'll do is put a couple of trinkets (a button... maybe a cup) next to some ice cold beer.  That should coax him back out of the shadows.

<------- not tough

It is good to see a couple of posts from you though Karl  Flower

P.S.  And for those of you wondering why I don't get a life... I'm in a middle of this implementation that has me sitting for the last 28 hours STRAIGHT at my computer.  I AM SO TIIIIRRREEED!

I'm considering getting one of those food vac thingies, but I'm not domesticated enough to be able to discern the difference between the 800 different models there are.  Does anyone have one of these handy little air-sucker-outers and if so, could you shed some light one which one to get?  I camp (car and backpack) year round, if that helps.  I appreciate it!   Flower

Hi Daniela!  Food Saver brand makes a great home-use vacuum sealer.  I mail ordered mine from Cabella's.  They have a bunch to choose from.  Basic to fancy.  They're excellent for protecting food from liquids in a cooler, and they have a bunch of other uses too...

Kaptain Karlos  Wave

Thanks, Karlos, but would you mind telling me which model you got?  They all look the same to me.  From $40.00 to $299.00.  How much sucking does a person really need?  For food, that is?   Flower

I'll be sure to bust the Kaptains chops when we brew the LlamaLlager this weekend.

As to the vaccum sealers... I have used them for long term food storage and found that the consumer version +or- 69.95 works just fine...

As for how much suck do you need Daniella Wink Wink

I've been backpacking for more years than I'd care to admit and would like to share a little technique of mine which works very well for all short term storage. It works especially well with humboldt county homegrown, dried  foods, and leftover turkey broth:

1) Place your material in a new gallon sized zip loc brand bag
2) seal the bag from either end toward the center until there is only about an inch remaining to seal.
3) using the thumb and forefingers of each hand on either side of the unsealed portion of the bag, make a small open hole in the unsealed bag.
4) Place your mouth over this hole
5) Inhale exuberantly.
6) the excess air will evacuate fairly quickly so that you can then
7) QUICKLY seal off the bag, leaving no excess air.

It works every time  Flower Flower Flower

 Cheers

ok everyone, this is a strange question, but my new eating lifestyle demands it: Is there by any chance a place to get fresh fruit/vegetable juice in Town? Like say a latte/juice bar? eh? I figure with all the beer, turkey, rumballs, oysters, etc. I may be eating, the least I can do is continue with my veggie/fruit juice for breakfast . . . .  Thumbs Up

I'm guessing there aren't many festivarians with a high powered juicer kickin' around their campsite . . . . than again, i've never been to TBF, so who knows!

Festivarians Frolic Frequently

Another perspective on the food/potluck/joyous environment, and I'm still very new to Town Park (2nd  year - not a virgin but low on the food chain relative to Monkeygirls time in and then there's Tom...).  Karlos knows people are kind and generous, but I sense a respectful give and take would make any virgin most welcome.  Here's what I put on the Rumball thread:

With the high number of virgins to our town park festivities, I thought I'd take a moment to make note.  People put a lot of effort into these events, it's really something.  My virgin year I felt blown away at the absolute mastery of the chefs and brewmasters.  From Steamboats sink to Jerry's oysters, they all take a great deal of effort and sometimes money.

In my opinion, the best thing to do to participate in rum balls, or another event, is to make a contribution.  A gift to the gods of sort.  A day or two before rum balls the wagon circulates to collect melon donations and "juice" donations.  If you can drop something off at another "established" camp I'm sure it would get there.  Otherwise, bringing a snack to contribute would be a great way to give and get good festivarian karma.

All these events are great because of the contributions and efforts people make to create it.  It's some of the finest beer, cooking, festivities you'll find.  Pitching in with something special, I think that would be a great idea.  I'm planning to bring something nice too, for the record.

Someone did have a gas powered blender in Town Park before, but people tended to not like the noise so much. EEK!

There are a couple places in town though that cater to the vegetarian/health food lifestyle, so you probably won't have a problem. Thumbs Up

There is ALWAYS a vegetarian alternative in Camp Run a Muck, and I'm not talking simply fermented grain juice with a a bit oc carbonation in it. Juice is easy.... simply put some stuff in the food processor and press ON Festival Mentality

 Cheers
