I had never heard of Poi Dog before seeing them at the 1992 fest (my first Telluride), and have been a huge fan since. They are amazing live. Saw them in Chicago about '95--one of the best dhows I've ever seen. At the Vic Theater--no AC on an August night when it was about 90 degrees. It was a Sunday night; the 4th night of the run, after the first three sold out immediately.  They played an amazing two hours and left the stage sweating and exhausted, but feeding off the audience (we were all dripping with sweat). I think they all needed to change into dry clothes and drink a gallon of water). It took literally at least 15 minutes before the came back for the encore; the crowd going wild.
When they came back they did an hour long encore set. It was one of the coolest and most impressive things I've ever seen. A sow I'll never forget.
Would love to see them them in Telluride again.
and this is reason # 3,824 why i love the internet and youtube. i just became an instant fan/ TY

Speaking of country AND previous band contest winners, the Dixie Chicks are touring again.  Would be a great closer one night!

I've been pretty silent on the forum since June, but I figure I might as well chime in here.

No one on this board will be surprised to see that I'd love to see The Dusters back again this year, though I doubt that will happen. I see them becoming an every other year band.

I'd love to see Railroad Earth back. Their last TBF set was less than stellar, but every time I've seen them in the past few years has simply been excellent. They'd e a great addition to the fest this year.

I imagine it will be difficult for The Dead Winter Carpenters to do much traveling this year, since Jenny Charles is expecting a child soon, but I'm sure they'd find a way to make a trip to Telluride work! They absolutely kill it every time I see them. I'm sure I've posted this video on here before, but it's always worth a listen. Plus, their new album, Washoe, is one of my favorite albums of the year!

Fruition is another up and coming act that is due for a Telluride appearance. True, they did play a nightgrass in 2015, but I think it's time we get them up on the mainstage.

I know it's uncommon for a first time band to be asked back the very next year (Mumford and Sons and Yonder being the only two semi-recent examples), but I definitely think The Lil Smokies should be the next to do it. In the 9 years that I've been going, I've never seen an 11:00 AM band get the kind of reaction The Lil Smokies got this year. I was up front and center with a handful of others who were familiar with the band when they started, but by the end of their set, everyone was on their feet and pushed as far forward as they could get. They got two standing ovations from the poser pit and an encore. An 11:00 AM band got an encore. That never happens! They've got a new album coming out soon and they've only gotten better since June. Let's get them back to the box canyon!

Oh, and Friday night should belong to Greensky as long as they want it.

Agreed with Sugar. Smokies should be invited back. Especially if they come back and play a nightgrass show at Camp Run-A-Muk.

But if you want to place a pretty good bet as to who will be invited next year, put your money on Billy Strings. He toured some with Leftover Salmon in the fall, has some shows lined up with the Dusters this winter. Amazing talent.  Cheers

Sug -

Smokies were the highlight of the fest for me last year.  Never saw a crowd like that at 11 am before and probably never will.

Their talent and boundless energy reminds me of Yonder about 8 years ago.  Back then I LOVED Yonder; now I LIKE Yonder.  But the Fest seems to create these "traditions" that never seem to break, like Yonder at 4 on Saturday, Sammy on Sat night and the House Band whenever they want to play.  It will take some time for the Smokies to move into that traditional process (look how long it's taken the Dusters, or Steep Canyon, or the many other exciting bands that come thru often but not consistantly), but I hope they move up in the fest lineup as fast as possible.

And I also look forward to fest finding the next up-and-comers.  Many suggestions on this thread prove that the next big thing is out there and could be headed our way this year.

Anyway, today (day after election) is a good day to concentrate on music instead of politics.  I need a beer.

Agree re Lil Smokies ( thanks Sugar) they were unbelievably good and deserve a bigger audience next year.

I hope Hot Rize are there, have been playing their stuff nonstop ( well in between Greensky, I finally got their back catalogue and OMG how great is Handguns?, am so late to the party)

I would also love to see AK and Union Station.i may have mentioned this about 3000 times.

I might be a long way away but I had many drinks last night. Sobering day.

Will be great to meet up the Telluride family and enjoy some big hugs! Big hugs back to you all.

What about Corb Lund?  He's awesome.

I'm with AF on the Allison Kraus dream, too.  It's been too long since we had AKUS!

I would personally prefer Justin Timberlake over the Biebs, though...  LOL
