Green Campsite Challenge

I LOVE this challenge but I don't think any of us small camps can compete with Run- A- Muck..

It's not a matter of camp size, It's a matter of SUSTAINABILITY!!!

I've heard size doesn't matter repeated over and over again throughout my life.

Also, competition, smompetition.  If Run a Muck is the big contender, throw them an edge, help with their concepts or contribute something to their "thang".   I can't really think of anything they don't already have, except maybe a garden to put their gray water into, wait, there's those trees.  Plus, I would think it's more difficult to be really green when there are so many people that descend upon one's camp.

But, after the oysters, bbq, fun on the tarps, yummy pancakes, great friends, sitting and staring through the chain link fence  at the wonderful festivarian scene and music, if they then sweep the green challenge, I'm fine with that.  All hail the mighty Run A Muck.

I agree with Hippie, Hope and The Courtness... If a camp the size of Run-A-Muck can win this, given the traffic, the size, and the magnitude of doing so considering everything they undertake during the festivities, then more power to them... 

Think of it this way - the message this sends to all festivarians is what is most important, is it not? 

Besides Debbie, there are multiple days to this event and everyone has a fair shot at any one of those days...even the grand prize!  So smile, get your boys involved and show us all how it's done!

Oh I know.. I was kinda thinking wrong last night.. Hope was right- the key is "sustainability." I was trying to get the boys involved and trying to get them to think up things we could do.. And, I got stuck in one of their "tangents" LOL.. Everything I suggested, they kept saying "someone else did already" and then they were coming up with "grand" projects that well, I can't do given the time constraints and monetary costs etc...LOL
They will probably be engineers one day. 

Anyway, we are all in awe of what the big camps have already done- more power to them!

But, help me make a list that I can show the kids of stuff we can do...... ( that doesnt involve major construction or major money..LOL) Do you know there are plans online so you can build solar-power Wii's..LOL

Oh, I wanted to sharre something that Matthew's school did last month that I thought was "very cool." This whole idea was thought up by a student BTW.. This is middle school.
The school held a walk-a- thon to raise money to buy Solar Ovens for the Women of Dafur. The school raised over 9,000 ( about 400 children attend this school).  I believe each oven costs 30.00.

Actually one of the winners last year in Lyons, arrived on a bicylce, has a very small pup tent, and was a one person camp.  i can't remember all of the details but he must have been doing everything possible... reusing utensils, using biodradable earth friendly everything...


 and playing a solar powered guitar, of course!

Another thing to think about is the energy/fuel comsumption involved in all the goods you eat/use/bring too. I heard an interesting comment regarding some bamboo flooring used in one of the green buildings in Boston. The builder, who was really trying to do it right, wondered whether the bamboo flooring, a highly renewal resource but shipped all the way from China could truly be considered "sustainable."  It's all balance I suppose.

Our travel footprint to Telluride sucks, with both flights and road travel, but we do try to minimize it as much as we can - although eating locally is pretty much off up that canyon.

I do hope the Planet will put compost in Town Park again. They do such a good job inside, we could make it work in Town Park don't you think?

We will not be providing compost buckets to each campground...not sure where that one started. Not a bad idea...but not happening this year.

Compost will once again be available, however, in Town Park. Each person/camp will be responsible for getting their stuff to the bins. Make sure the bins you bring have a lid that is able to stay on pretty well. The town park critters like that kind of stuff, you know.

You got the email about the sustainability things, right Auntie Hope?

Ilovethelorax - There are many things you can do while at TBF to reduce your carbon footprint. Turn off all your lights at home...cut the AC...heck, shut the breaker to everything but the fridge. That way you aren't using any energy while you are camping with us. We've calculated your travel (on average, and as close as we could figure it) into our carbon offset...so your flights, etc...are covered.

In fact...by taking the right steps to make sure you aren't unnecessarily using energy at home while you are away, and with our offsets for your travel, your trip to Telluride could...in theory...be Carbon POSITIVE!

Great idea on the Green challenge!

Did you know that when leaving chords plugged into power oulets there is a charge that sucks a little bit of energy?  This happens even if the lamp/appliance/whatever isn't even turned on!  Just another way you can help while at festival or just at home.

Nice idea with the cups Courtness, but I think Michelle and I would for sure lose our voices again.
