Early Role Call & Roundup for Lawson Hill Campers

Hello festevarian freinds, my name is Patrick, and it will be my first TBF experience. As I have been lurking through this pretty overwhelming forum, I have noticed, besides the outstanding spirit and musical savy, that people tend to favor Mary Illium over Lawson. My friend and I nievely bought camping passes for Lawson soley on the basis that it was closer. So, I hope that former Lawson attendees (and hopefully current as well) can paint me a nicer picture. I guess in the end it won't necessarily be where you're at, but who you're with that will really make the difference. Either way I am sure it will be a superb experience, as have all of the festivals that I have attended have.

More importantly, I want to start getting to know some of the folks that are going to be floating around Lawson, come June. I think that we would all agree that the fellow festevarians that you meet and party with throughout the experience are half the fun. So, maybe we should talk about meeting up to share some beers or something on the Tuesday or Wednesday before the festival, to kick things off I suppose. And, I am especially interested in getting to know some of the pickers and musicians that will be around, ready to jam.

Perhaps I am jumping the gun on this, but I guess it can't hurt. Peace

We'll be bringing 2 guitarists and a mando player with us to Lawson from Phoenix. Im ALWAYS up for meeting new folks for pickin' and beers.  A Wednesday get together sounds brilliant to me.  

2 of us will be arriving Sat afternoon and camping in TP until Lawson opens.  I figure this will give us at least a taste of the TP experience and a chance to introduce myself to some of these fine folks who have been doing it for years.

Nice to meet you guys. I dabble around on the piano and acoustic and electric guitars, but mostly acoustic. One of my roomates got a mando last week, so I have been familiarizing myself with the basic chords and such. My friend that is coming with me to TBF, Kody, is a mandolin player though. Bluegrass playing isn't my forte' but I've been progressively learning more and more, and love it. Hopefully by the time June rolls around I'll be ready to do some intense Bluegrass jamming. Do you mainly play Bluegrass, or no?

Getting there on Saturday sounds like a grand idea, although I think the earliest we'll be able to make it out is Tuesday. So what have you two heard about Lawson? What acts are you pumped for? And last but not least, what kind of beer do you like to drink?

Mainly bluegrass and old timey tunes, some dead tunes, alot of the Garcia/Grisman stuff

So what have you two heard about Lawson? What acts are you pumped for? And last but not least, what kind of beer do you like to drink?

I havnt heard much, the camping looks a bit crowded, but thats not the end of the world by any means. I did hear that a great Jam was shut down at 1:45 one night last year instead of the 2:00 quiet time due to folks with kids complaining.  I hope my neighbors bring ear plugs for their younguns should they have any lol.  Im going to try to set up camp in deep left field since i'll be there early.  I welcome loud fun folks to join me, i wont complain

Im probably most excited to see the house band, Ive seen alot of those guys solo or with their own bands but never all together.  All of my absolute favorite bluegrass recordings involve most of those guys together.  Im also really hoping to see some Hornsby with Bela, im about 90% sure it will happen at some time or another. Also im really stoked to see... Rowan, salmon, Yonder, del, emmit nershi, Punch Bros, Tim O', and Soloman Burke.

Ill be fully loaded with more than a weeks worth of local micro brews and newcastle for drinking and sharing.  lookin forward to it

Last year I camped at Lawson, and I felt it was a pretty prime location.  The bus ride into town is beautiful and only takes around 15 to 20 minutes.  But it is straight through the mountains, so it could be longer   I had a great time, the lines for the bathroom were never ridiculous and the people were always friendly.  Just don't wash your dishes in the river!

Cletusaz, the 1:45 cut-off thing scares me. Hopefully we'll have campers around us that want to get down late in the night or at least have tolerance. And trust me, my couple of friends and I are plenty loud and fun, and will essentially be willing to jam for hours upon hours. What are some of your favorite tunes to play? Perhaps I can look into learning them, to jump us ahead of the getting-to-know-the-fellow-jammer period. As for Garcia/Grisman, who I love, I know Jack-a-roe and some of So What, but haven't tried much else.

I think between you guys and us we will have plenty of good beer to drink throughout the experience. As for camping, we are planning on arriving right when the damn thing opens, so we'll probably be followin' you guys in. Why left field? Shade?

Yeah, I just got my volunteer info in yesterday and I'm working the lawson campground, which I''m camping at as well. pretty prime work schedule too.

Tuesday 4-8, wed 4-8 thurs, 12-4 and friday 8-noon, and a free tix. Friday satuday, sunday off, I like very much. See you all there.

As for left field...I figure the sound of the river will be nice to sleep to and it might help keep the noise i make from bothering others.  Where Id really like to camp is in the overflow area just behind the left field fence but im not sure the odds are very good for that. It would be ideal though, im a bit claustrophobic at times...

What up fellow Lawson campers?  This will be our first time to the bluegrass fest and camping at lawson.  We have been to the blue and brews fest many many times and camped in town park, no lottery for that fest.  Anyway, we are looking forward to meeting everybody and having a grand time.

BTW, I recognize cletusaz from the goat head, had no idea you were going to the fest
