That's a great video!

Recently, I've been listening to a lot of Reggae. But closer to the bluegrass world is a group called Patchy Sanders. They were finalists in the Strummit competition this year. I loved their sound and their energy. They were truly unique and I was pretty shocked when they didn't win.

Plus, the 2013 Strummit winners, The Lil Smokies, keep getting better and better. Their set at River City Roots Festival this year was a highlight for me.

Yep, that's great!
The "Summer of Melancholy" rolls on @ my house, (and for Deb as well? Great to hear you're home!) and I just can't stay away from
Southeastern.

No Planet fests at all for me this summer, but friends say his Nightgrass was stellar.  Medal
That, and "SIXTY". My souvenir from missing JCow @TBF-41 http://compassrecords.com/album.php?id=1058

Jammin w' Jaco

Well, I've been doing a lot of coding, so I've been dipping back into the GOGD  (That's the Good Ole' Grateful Dead).   When I need some serious background jamming for creating software, I always find my way back home   LOL

Mainly I've been mining the Spotify collection of Dick's Picks and Road Trips releases for the '73, '74 and '79 stuff.

But when I'm not doing that, the playlist in heaviest rotation features Spearhead, Dropkick Murphys, Bob Mould, Leftover Salmon, Foo Fighters, Imelda May, The Wailin' Jennies, Stringdusters, GSBG, Crooked Still and Aoife O'Donovan

yeah... I know...

The band that  I have been following and listening to the most this summer is Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. They were good when they were in the Telluride band contest two years ago, they finished in third place. They have become the best young band in the Midwest. Great sets this summer at Delfest, the John Hartford Memorial Festival, Summerfest, a tour of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, and this past weekend at Jackpine Jamboree. This is there time. They have become my new destination band, one that I'm willing to travel to see. Folks around here are wondering how they got so good. It may go back twenty years ago when a then four year old Adam Gruel went to see the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with his parents and older brother at a local county fair. During a set break they went to have the band sign his cowboy hat and the next thing his mother notices is he is getting on the bus with the band and trying all there instruments out. That love of music was in him, he knew what he wanted to do for his life. They are ready to be back on a Planet Bluegrass stage.
Another band I saw for the first time this last weekend the Drunken Catfish Ramblers from New Orleans , they were a lot of fun and I want to catch them again.

Would love to see the Lii' Smokies, Missoula's hottest band, playing some killer original bluegrass/new grass songs.  They totally killed it at River City Roots Fest.  High point of the fest for a lot of folks, and that's not bad when you have the Deadly Gentlemen and Sammy on the same bill.
Cheers,
Ellen

Aside from the perennials,
Infamous Stringdusters (should be there every year)
David Byrne (still the best set I've seen at Telluride)
Steep Canyon Rangers
Seldom Scene (while Ben is still with them!)
John Prine
Barefoot Movement (did well in 2013 Troubadoor and developing nicely!)
Della Mae
