How was the Planet Bluegrass area coming along?

Hi,

I could not make it to Rockygrass. However, I am highly considering Folks Fest. I have never been to Planet Bluegrass in Lyons and was wondering how you old timers thought the area was coming along after the flood.

1. Did you have a lot of rain (I was out of state until last night)
2. How is the on site campground compared to the Meadow Camp ground? Mud/facilities/showers/restrooms etc
3. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rain was not bad. Pretty much just showed up to cool us down.
Meadow Park was still under construction, but I am assuming it will be better/ possibly complete by folks based on the fact that the riverbend upgrade will not be available. There is sod on the ball field which is nice, but very little shade. I am sure this will improve as the construction comes along.
On site was mostly wood chips rather than sod under the tents I believe but whoa what a party. There will likely be more picking and late night action on site then in Meadow.
Folks is quite a bit calmer then RG. I go to folks with my extended family and all enjoy, from my 67 yr old mom to my 4 yr old niece.  We always stay in Meadow park. 
But I say if you have not been to the ranch, do it. Plus in my opinion the line up is fantastic.

Thank you so much for your response. I am trying to figure out what to do for camping. MP you can arrive anytime (which means days to weeks earlier) On site can only start camping from Thursday on. So, that is my sticking point. MP for early arrival on On site for convenience? What are the perks of being On site??

I'll translate that into Telluride for you:   What's the difference between Town park and Lawson Hill?

It's not that extreme a difference, but that should make you think.   Frankly, I can't imagince camping for a Lyon fest and not being on-site, but I also wouldn't ever be outside Town Park

Stay on site it will be worth it. The showers are beautiful, a real toilet, a mirror and the company can cot be beat. Everyone from Song School stays and it's a good good thing. On site is the only way to go if you can manage it. The Ranch grounds are beautiful as always!

It's more like Town Park versus the High School except there's jam sessions in Meadow Park.

Why schlep your tarp, chair, cooler, and extra clothing from Meadow Park when you can run back to camp whenever you need something and still hear the music in doing so.

I loved the way PBG framed the posters of TBF past in the Wild Flower Pavillion.  and a Bar! Really nice!

The stage looks bigger then life now and so solid looking like it has seen some flood and stood tall to the test. Character any way you slice it!!!

No dust! I saw the Fire Dept. many times the community working together for Fest. Fest supports Lyons and we LOVE THAT!

I walked in and parked it fast as you could count to 10. What an outstanding way to spend my time, over and over again.

The Music, the river the ease of it all....intoxicating.

I have another question about on site camping. Difference between front area camping that allows vehicle camping and back area that is tent camping only. I have an opportunity to buy on site camping with or without vehicle pass. What do you recommend?

Same with me, I wasn't at Rockygrass but I'm going to Folks Fest.  What is the backstage campground like now?  Were a lot of the trees destroyed by the flood?  Are there still river front campsites?  What about the main campground?  Those were smaller trees, did they survive the flood?  I assume there was no sod put down on the campgrounds, is it just dirt and rock?

The backstage camping is pretty much entirely on wood chips. There are still plenty of trees to camp under and next to. You can still camp right next to the creek. The wood chips are actually kind of nice in that water flows through them very quickly. Whenever we drained our coolers, you couldn't even see where the water went as it all just drained straight down through the wood chips. I was being conscious of where to drain so that I wouldn't end up causing a stream of water to go toward anyone's tent or the path. That didn't end up being a problem and we literally could have drained them immediately next to our tent with no problem. I guess the only inconveniences of the wood chips were that stakes weren't the easiest to put in (though still doable) and you'd tend to get wood chips in your tent. I never noticed a ponding or mud problem the whole weekend. As always, make sure to get far enough away from the bathrooms!

Rockygrass camping on the soccer fields at Bohn was nice and comfy.    Not sure what next year will bring, though.

Lots and lots of grass onsite at the main camping area.  Wood chips on walking paths in some areas.  Bathhouses pretty much the same, but with some very nice river stone additions to the showers.

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind me piggybacking on your thread. I'm heading to Folks this month and have a few questions.

Can anyone tell me how the seating area has changed particularly with regard to shade and sound quality? It looks from the pictures I could find that the big trees to center left are still standing, which is fantastic. Are there still trees along the river? Is there seating over where the beach used to be, now that it's moved, and how is the sound?

I have some difficulty with auditory processing...last year (after several years of EZ up listening) I returned to the stone bench area and was shocked by how much better I could understand lyrics from the stage speakers instead of the tall ones in the back.  I loved being over to the river side in the past (and going back and forth from Wildflower) so if the sound is better over there than it used to be, maybe I'll go that direction some this trip.

Anyway, any thoughts you have would be welcome!
