Does anyone that caught the sea shanty workshop feel like giving me a summary? I am doing research on sea shanties and missed most of the set. Or video footage? I caught the last 2 songs but they weren't related to sea shanties. Just curious if he named any or gave a history lesson etc...  thanks!

His set was one of the best of the whole festival. The clear highlight was a Stan Rogers shanty led by Dave Rawlings called Barrett's Privateers. It was Willie, the entire Dave Rawlings Machine + Sara Watkins, Noam Pikelny, and I think a couple others from Punch. That was one of the best moments of live music I've ever heard. I really hope someone taped that.

Willie sang another shanty on his own, but I can't name it. Can't wait to see if someone made a setlist.

I took a couple of crappy & incomplete smartphone videos during the set. I haven't watched them yet. Hopefully they're tolerable.

I spoke with the guy who appears to be the sole taper of this set. He apparently tapes for himself and usually does not share his recordings on any of the usual places. He apparently had quite a few requests for this set especially and apparently received email addresses (including mine) from those interested in downloading a copy of the show. He apparently accomplishes this by uploading the show to Dropbox and then emails an invite to those whose email addr he received. Unfortunately, because of limitations on his Dropbox account, he will probably only share an mp3 format copy of the show. Still, this show in ANY format is a must have.

Stan Rogers was an exceptional talent. As a Canuck I was fortunate to listen to him often, and actually saw him perform once. Sadly, he died in a plane crash fire many years ago, ironically, in Cincinnati,
ago. Listen to his song, the Rawdon Hills, you will enjoy it.

I have no idea the order, but the songs I know he sang are Stewball, Mexican Cowboy, Take This Hammer, Barrett's Privateers, Midnight Special. I think he also played Rock Salt & Nails, Keep It Clean. I can't think of the other shanty he played or the other hammer song.

It was one of our highlights. We love Willie! Still miss him in Old Crow, but glad he's back out there and with a damn good group of musicians. I video recorded a whole song. I forget which one. I'll post it in time.

   

Buy his album Folk Singer Vol. 1. All covers of old folk songs. Good stuff.

He also sang a variation of Spike Driver's Blues (referred to above as Take This Hammer) and perhaps a John Henry tune?

I loved Dave Rawlings introducing me to Stan Rogers.  He, Gillian and Willie had all clearly performed the tune together before- though he remarked that he had never sang it from stage.  The rest of the folks gathered behind them learned it as they went.


Closing it all out with The Weight and an acapella Don't Leave Nobody But The Baby was just icing on the cake.
