This will be our first time at TBGF. We are staying at Ridgeway State Park. Sounds like it's about 45 minutes to an hour away. Are we insane? Is it going to be scary driving back at night on those roads? In a Class C motorhome, I might add.

Thanks,
Rebecca

Telluride Bluegrass Fest -- 2011

URL icon « Reply #2 on: June 11, 2014, 11:15:34 PM »

We've stayed in Ridgeway and in Ouray and commuted to TBF several years.   The drive isn't bad at all.  When driving at night, watch for Elk on the road, especially the first couple hours after sunset.  The drive is scenic and seems shorter the more you make it.  I suspect the biggest issue will be parking.  A Class C won't fit in the Mountain Village garage, so plan on parking on the road to Mountain Village and hoofing it to the parking garage gondola.
Regardless, I'm sure it'll be a great trip.

That's what I'm worried about!  Once we realized how far away it is, we started thinking about skipping it and selling our tickets  huh

Thanks Kevin! Looks like I need to research the parking issue.  So is either 145 or 62 "white knuckle" driving? Sheer drop offs, no guardrail, blind curves, that type of thing?

Have seen worse white knuckle, but it's the wildlife which I'd be cautious about ... But you should be fine if you go the speed limit or 5mph undre

If it's your first time at the fest it will be worth it.  It may not be ideal, but at least this way you can see everything that the festival has to offer and maybe you'll decide to camp/condo next year (because I guarantee you'll want to come back).

Well, not everything. The festival campsites are half the fun!

I agree 100%, but I was trying to encourage them to not cancel.  The camping scene is an entirely different aspect to the festival that makes TBF truly great, but for Festivirgins, you just have to get your foot in the door.

Camp Run a Muck

URL icon « Reply #11 on: June 12, 2014, 10:45:28 AM »

It's true. My first few years were spent arriving just in time for the music and leaving either Monday morning or Sunday night after the house band finished. And that's what gave me the bug. Now I arrive about a week before the festival and camp up on the hill in Run a Muck, experiencing all of the lovely pre-fest activities. It's a completely different experience and one that I cherish, but if I hadn't done those first few years, I wouldn't be coming back year after year.

Where is "up the hill" and is camp Run a Muck in Town Park like Kamp Duk tape? Does one have to choose an alliance or can you Kamp hop?

Sorry to hijack the thread. What I love about Festivarians is they are very encouraging. I think parking your camper at your camp site and renting a car sounds ideal as suggested. And I like the thought that Insane=Less than ideal.

If it was me...I would try to parlay my hand into a better deal closer by if it is reasonable to do so. However, looking at roll call...people are coming from near and far to this festival...truly amazing. This is my first TBF and I am very excited. Hope the OP can work things out.

Kamp hopping is highly encouraged.  Run-A-Muck is only a short stumble from Kamp DukTape.
