If you can't get up early enough to get a sunshade spot, and you are standing there with a miserable baby in need of shade, festivarians are going to be falling over themselves to offer you a spot to sit down.  It is the best crowd in the world.  You have nothing to worry about.

Also, a nice walk through some vendor tents right on the festival grounds gives some shade, the main souvenir tent is a nice big patch of shade, and there is a first aid tent in the corner where you can sit in the shade and I think they even have free bottled water and sunscreen (and whatever else you need).

This makes me nervous -- if I want a sunshade spot, will I have to get in line the night before?? This will be our first year trying for this type of space. We really want our 1.5 yr old to have some respite from the sun, but don't have the resources to sleep in line. Can anyone advise here? We may need to revise our plan.

Z

I can only assume that the situation has gotten worse, if folks are lining up the afternoon before. A couple of things and no we don't have kids, so please take that into consideration and of course consider the source! Maybe consider not even taking your sunshade and instead make some friends and share their shade? Another suggestion, depending on if you want respite or actual rest for your toddler, is Family activity area, I believe there is some shade there, but not certain as to nap area, the downside is that you are away from the festival.

Good luck!

Those three-sided beach umbrella things are annoying as all get-out, because they block the view for everyone behind. Likewise a tent. Keltys are good because you can see through them, ez-ups even better (until people start putting up walls, etc.).

Agreed, re: 3-sided being super annoying.  Among other things, they ...

- incumber the sound (for real)
- take all that is "wrong" with tarps to begin (IMO) with to a whole nother level in so far as "privitizing space" in a GA setting
The Kealty syndrome has surpassed annoyance.  Careful, don't get caught being on a tarp up front and setting a shade spot in the back, cause for expulsion.

Has security ever actually expelled someone from the festival for having a sunshade in the back and a tarp down front?

I think it was a personal issue.  Actually, I had only intent to set up a shady spot in the back for my family, after helping a tarp run for one of the original Festival groups.  It was all confusing, as it was very upsetting, and seems unfair to this day.  I was expelled, left a food vendor in the lurch, as well as losing income for the weekend.  After twenty years with the festival, numerous points of support for the festival and myself, from stage crew to production, backstage catering, numerous vendor chef positions, through Beer Booth (no more by our local radio.)  I still love the festival and support it happening.  Life has challenges, some sour grapes inevitable, more love the only good answer.  Flower

I'm having trouble understanding this.  Someone was actually paying enough attention to see you set up two tarps?  There must be more to this story?

We plan to set up two tarps, one for my parents who don't want the loud volume and party atmosphere up front, and one for my sister and I up close.  I don't see the problem with this at all.  In fact, according to the rules, it seems we could EACH set up a tarp for a total of 4.

Basically, have a great time.  It's a good and reasonable festival.  I was setting up two spots solo, my family breakfasting.  Hopefully you can bring a friend/ family member to help lay two modest spots.  As your logic of the rules seems infallible.  Peace

oof.  Just went through setting the Kelty up to see what needed repairs.  other than fixing the 2 broken poles, my biggest realization was I needed to practice putting it up as I wasn't nearly fast enough.  William Tell and Mr Soundman would have been long over by the time I was done.  That guy in the Town Line with the wagon full of stuff that is always at the front could have put 2 up in the time it took me!

I know, I know.  The sun shade is soooo much easier to carry/pack/lug around that it makes up for it.  Though this might be the last year for it as for 41, I imagine everybody will be too big to fit comfortably underneath.

I did see a good deal on a 10x10 straight leg (I'll never buy the slant leg again) with sides at costco....hmmm....

We think this is the best way to lug or pack an EZ-Up.  These things are ridiculously expensive at retail, but can be found for next to nothing at a yard sale near you.
