Please don't let this happen, I love cheese did most of their shows las year, but not at telluride bluegrass, I know that they have a storied history of playing there, but they are no longer the same band that they were then, and definitely draw a different crowd of young kids. If they wait to announce until after its sold out, it won't stop any of cheese's wook fans from coming Frown

SCI was quite core to the festival in the 90's.  Their late night (all night) Quonset Hut and Art Factory shows were legend, set the stage for what we now know as Night Grass, and pre-dated Yonder's Conference Center and Sheridan shenanigans by years and years.  I don't care how bluegrass they used to be, or how un-bluegrass they became in later years, those guys would be quite welcome, by me anyway, at any future TBF.  And given their low profile in the recent past, I can't see that having them there would be anything like having Phish or Panic on the bill.  Besides, their "fans" are us.  Bring it!

I'm old school, and it doesn't make me nervous at all.  I've missed 'em, and could use a little Cheese infusion.

But they'd better choose their setlist carefully.  As much as I've loved Cheese over the years, they can be as boring as Railroad Earth sometimes.    EEK!

As long as Andy Goessling is on stage, I don't see how RRE can be boring, but to each his own.

I can't argue with that, but it happens.  Some background:  I used to hang around the Stanhope house in Stanhope, NJ...it was a great little dive with awesome music on the weekends, ranging from locals to really big-name touring acts (Really??  Pinetop Perkins and Gatemouth brown for $6?).

Two of the bands I saw a lot were the Blue Sparks from Hell and From Good Homes.  Good times...lots of good times.  These bands, were of course the genesis of RRE.   I'd heard of RRE, and where the bandmates had come from, and was pretty jazzed about it, but they got going around the same time my growing family got started, and I didn't have a lot of cycles or energy for new music.   So I didn't really hear them until they came to Telluride, 10 years later.

I was psyched....they were on my "top 3" list 2 years ago...and I couldn't wait to check them out.  I was completely bummed that it hit me as a total snoozefest.   I appreciate the talent, I love the band members on a personal and a musical level, but their output on that night was (to my ears) a droning, repetitive, sedative.   Very disappointing.  And I should give them a chance and listen more, but life's too short and there's too much good music to have to put in time to learn to like a band.

I was at the 30th anniversary, when SCI was last there.  I loved them!  I don't know if they're boring now or not, but would love to see them back.  I also love RRE, but was disappointed that we got no "Head" the last time they were at Telly.   Wink

At the risk of being pelted by things....I've never heard of the String Cheese Incident.  I don't think they would be as big of a draw as ya'll are thinking.

Fair enough. I was pretty psyched for that show as well, but ended up sleeping through it (I believe I was dehydrated, but that night is a little foggy), so I can't really speak to that performance. Next time they come to Telluride, I'd recommend giving them another listen if at all possible. I imagine catching all the artists becomes much more difficult when you start bringing the little ones, and there will probably be many other artists you'd rather see. Give them a listen from up at Run a Muck if you can.

SCI would have to really bring it to be one of the "big names" still slated. Otherwise, I'd feel like I was checking the boards several times a day for a disappointment.

I hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but I just don't get it. If someone wants to point me to a show or several to listen to as a mind-changed, I'm happy to listen and give them several hours of a shot, but I saw SCI with Phil & Friends in '01 and damned if they didn't bore me. Maybe it was the daylight, or maybe it was the guy next to me who barfed at 5:30 p.m. during the SCI set, but I'm not convinced by their albums and I wasn't convinced by that show.

Yea if anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them. Have tried to get into them, but just havent heard anything that I fell in love with.

Here's a show from this past summer from Flagstaff ... it's a fairly varied setlist, so I guess it might give you an idea of some of the different directions they may take things.

... Stanley Jordan sat in for a lot of this show, which I thought was awesome (in particular on Impressions & RIMSBA as a bluegrass tune).   They're sit in friendly, and would be psyched to see someone such as Peter Rowan collaborate on stage (Sweet Melinda, Walls of Time, etc.) ... kind of funny hearing the "I'm so embarrased" of what they've become .... since PR seemed to be one to smooth things over for them at more traditional bluegrass festivals way back when.

We were at the Flagstaff SCI show.  It was anything but boring.  Stanley Jordan was incredible.  I hope the rumor is true and that they do end up at the 40th TBF!

Here's a good set from SCI in Nashville last year.  Very heavy on the bluegrass, as Sam Bush sat in for almost the entirety of the first set. If we're lucky enough to be graced by their presence this festival, then I would imagine their set would look/sound like this.

On RRE - my favorite band (with Greensky/String Cheese), but agreed that their TBF mainstage performance a couple years ago was slower. If you're not into them that much, a 7 Story Mtn on the setlist for a 90 minutes set could make/break it for you.  However, they did kill it at the Sheridan for their nightgrass & I've loved them every other time I've seen them. Your milage may vary.

Either way, I'm anxiously awaiting the announcement with the rest of you.

I enjoyed the Flagstaff show a lot. Who knows, maybe Stanley Jordan would sit in as it's not far from Northern AZ and he's been doing a lot of it. That tour is a good place to look for recent examples of good to great. Flagstaff is also a great example of a small crowd (3000 capacity). No problems at all.

If it happens, I can't wait. It'll be a highlight for me.  FWIW, Sam Bush also sat in during Horning's last year. I really hope this happens.

I've listened to RRE a lot and I can think of many examples of albums and sets I've enjoyed very much but 2 years ago was a snoozer to the max. I was pretty disappointed and had the clear thought "they blew it" (main stage TBF opportunity). By no means was it a "fire" set. I heard Sheridan was much better than main stage.

I'll take anyone's extras if Cheese is there and you don't wanna be  LOL

I'm excited for anything that PBG books....they've opened my eyes to lots of acts that I would say when I see their names on a lineup...meh.  But when you get down to it, Planet Bluegrass knows what they are doing.  So Cheese or no Cheese, I'm pumped for the 40th!

I'd love to see SCI, since that's one band I've never had a chance to see live. Wooks....meh, will be wooks. Any band we like could bring a few along with them, and it won't be any worse than any other year we've seen a big name on the bill.

That said, RRE is one of my (and Mrs. Pilgrim's, and both little Pilgrims') favorites. A band we would willingly travel to see if they are anywhere near NE Ohio. A mellow set is something we've seen before (followed by more of a rager for a second set). Given the relatively shorter main stage set times, it's too bad RRE wasn't as satisfying for everyone, but we loved it all the same.

Finally, GREENSKY, please! Thumbs Up

That first set is hard to argue with, for sure; real fun, and I like that it's acoustic. That said, it seems like what I particularly like about it is not necessarily SCI ... the songs I'm most impressed with don't seem to showcase actual members of SCI, nor are they SCI songs, for example. I'll keep listening and trying out the suggestions here!
