I thought I share a note that my friend was hit by a beach ball so hard so she is going to require multiple surgeries  for crushed bones. Really.

So next year when you see one, do use a favor: don't hit back up (or even worse spike as happened to us), just pop it.

I don't get why Planet Bluegrass says no Frisbees, when a weight of big beach ball is greater!

I feel like there must be an important detail missing from this story.  I don't see how a beach ball, even one spiked at fairly close range, can crush bones.

I don't know anyone who has been injured by them, but they are really *&#^@&* annoying.

This thread made me think of Bobby and Tom P. when the beach balls started to fly
they opened their pocket knives and placed them on top of their heads . Too bad they missed. Evil

Must have been that huge beach ball that was going around.  It was slammed down on a friend of mine, knocking her to the ground.  Maybe same friend?

the marshmellows are equally as annoying - they do not crush bones, but they do sting when pegged from close range and are terrible to step on when it's hot...just sayin...not as bad this year as last though!

Last year I was sitting behind a guy that had his prescription glasses broken from getting hit in the face from a beach ball. He was pissed because he and his wife had to leave to go back to Mountain Village to get a spare set of glasses so he could see. The marshmallow thing is stupid too. Anytime things are thrown or hit into the air it causes aggressive behavior especially when alcohol is involved. It's very distracting and takes away something from the performers on stage. Also I stepped on a marshmallow last year and it was stuck on the bottoms of my Chaco's for weeks.     Mad

If there was a real MC like the Mustard, they could make announcements discouraging airborne objects, smoking of tobacco products and general behavior suggestions.

Alright, I have been reading these posts and I think that anyone who comes in attendance to these festivals needs to realize it is in fact a FESTIVAL.  This festival is much more tame and the patrons are much more respectful than you find at a lot of other festivals.

My feelings are the more you restrict festivarians to rules and regulations, the less people are going to enjoy the festival and what it has always been to them.  I think PB does a great job already of regulating things and making sure the festival is a safe and pleasant place for everyone.  In my opinion, if you aren't happy with things, then don't go to a festival.  You are in a crowd with nearly 10,000 people and you aren't always going to like the actions of others.  And if someone is doing something around you that you aren't happy with, a simple "hey, would you mind smoking over there or not throwing that around us" would probably be appreciated by most in attendance rather than rules being enforced on everyone.

I agree. All of us have voices and you will be surprised what a simple request can do. One night while my son and I were in the trap line, around 3-4am, the folks next to me asked if I minded if they lit up some pot.. I frankly stated, I prefer not since my kid was laying right there .. ( He and I would prefer he doesn't breathe it).. They said NO problem, we understand and went a bit a ways....

I'm not sure if the guy who had his glasses broken went around asking the few thousand people slamming the beach balls around to stop. Hopefully he's reading this so he will the the right thing next time

It's really nice that the exchange happened respectfully and with clear communication from both parties that way.

I don't think that's how things often work, which is why so many people get miffed about the behavior of others. Myself included.

No more rules are necessary -- increased awareness of those around us, mutual respect, and communication as individuals will help. We're all guests in Town Park, after all.

It was really awesome when... I walked around the grounds during the afternoon, particularly during the Stringdusters and Emmitt Nershi and everyone was smiling, dancing, and all the kids were playing, and it was so evident that there were nothing but good vibes in the air.  Great afternoons at the show this year.
