Why is it there were no applauds for encores?????

Clapping is an expression of approval through applause: an expression of approval by loud continuous clapping.

I am confused by this. I was always taught to show my joy from music by applause.

I think a lot of it had to do with bands playing right up to the end of their scheduled time. A lot of them didn't leave any time for encores. The audience tried desperately to get Mumford to do one, but they played right up till 9:00 and no one wanted to cut into Robert Plant's set.

More generally, I've noticed that people simply feel entitled to an encore. I can't say that bands haven't brought this on themselves, in some ways, but I also find it a bit silly.

A couple of years ago I watched Ryan Adams & the Cardinals smoke through an amazing set -- sound and performance-wise -- only to hear the same fans that were rocking and cheering through the entire set shouting curses at the stage when he didn't play an encore.  Weird.

The times they are a changin indeed. Not to sound stuffy but I think this is a sad sad thing. All live performance needs feedback but boos are out . Some folks have no idea how much balls it takes to belt it out or put original songs out there. We need these people to find ourselves through their music. It would be a horrible shame if we never let them know how much we adore them. And if you don't like a performance the polite thing to do is well nothing, but not boo, ever, not even for an unfulfilled encore.

I for one applaud and will continue even if there is a new trend taking place.

Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Thank you to all the bands for showing us a fabulos time, thank you!

I clap for encores too  Thumbs Up

The think with the Telluride bluegrass festival is that everything is run like clockwork ... so you know there's not going to be an encore if an act goes off the stage at the end of their designated time slot.   This is especially true in the middle of the day.   I believe Peter Rowan technically ended his set early and came back for an encore medley (unless I'm mistaken - kind of a blur  huh ).   Headliners are a bit different ... as you have assume they're only fighting possibly a curfew and not the 'traffic cop' from PB who's trying to insure the rest of the day's schedule goes smoothly.

Not saying it we shouldn't clap for encores, but I think festivarians have grown to accept the reality of how things tick and have basically relinquished this time honored tradition.  I think it's just a casualty or unintended consequence of running fine tuned festival.

I personally feel like an encore is a bit absurd... They're scheduled a certain amount of time to play, so it's not like it makes a difference whether they disappear for a few seconds before that last song.

It's a little different for closers, of course... An encore makes sense if there's nobody playing afterwards.

If encores are silly, so are the pre-start waiting times.  So many bands get their stuff all set up, then the stage just sits there empty until the official start time hits the clock.  I can't believe, especially at a place where time is of the essence and bands seem to want to play more, that they don't just rush onto the stage as soon as they can.

Case in point - Yonder's stage was set for more than 10 minutes before the boys came out.  I would have thought they would love the extra performance time.  Yeah, I understand that perhaps the sound crew was getting a well-deserved break, or perhaps Yonder had no idea the stage was ready, but an extra song or two would always be appreciated!

Some people who want to see the show might not show up until the show is scheduled to start, and thus might miss something if they start early.

whatever man. Does an encore validate an entire set? No. Sometimes there's an encore, sometimes there isn't. Just go with it.  Flower

I stand by my words, just clap to show appreciation not expectation. I love the fact that they are just in front of me, pouring out their soul for all to hear and we should clap. No debate Thumbs Up

I noted the lack of big group jams...especially at the end of Sammy's set.  And last year Mumford pulled out quite a few folks for a jam at the end as well.  Was it coincidence or maybe Planet Bluegrass wanted to orchestrate it different this year?  Either way is was a great year.  But it is always fun to see how many people Sammy can pull out on stage to crank out a extended final song.

DUH!!!  Good point!  I guess if I ever DID make it to a show on time, I'd be mad (or at least very confused) if someone was already playing!  I'd probably be cursing my watch!  Thanks for straightening me out.

Not us. Jamming and guesting are at the discretion/ invitations of the artists to one another...

It just worked like that this year, apparently.
