What are your best TBF memories?

My favorite was the Old and in the Way reunion that closed out 1996. Jerry Garcia was missing but you could feel his presence in the crowd. Very moving performance.

* In 2001, when Sam was singing "Howling at the Moon" and a huge full moon came up over the     mountains, and the whole crowd howled together.

* In 2002, when the US was playing in the World Cup, and the game was in South Korea, so it was broadcast at about 5am on Friday.  When I went out at 6, to relieve my friend who had been sitting in line since 4, I was walking up the line giving people updates on the soccer game.  They were so grateful that someone checked the score at that hour.

* Gillian Welch doing "White Rabbit" and "Mr. Fantasy".  What a mind-blowing surprise!

* Allison Krauss closing the festival with "Oh! Atlanta!"

* When my friend went to the Magick Market to get me some cold medicine (I was so sick!), and he came back to the condo and said he stood in line behind Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt.

Continued:

* Many happy hours at Rico's Bar in the Ice House -- it's a daily ritual.  Listening to Rico's stories about Telluride when he first came there in 1969.

* Early morning hours sitting in line.  My favorite time is between 5 & 6.  The sun is just coming up.  It gets really cold, so people start stirring.  We're beginning to talk, but not very loud yet.  It's magical.  I've met some of the most remarkable people sitting in line.

* Mark & Suzy's wedding by the Beaver Pond with Bela Fleck and Edgar Mayer playing in the background.  Then throwing a wedding reception in our condo!

These were the days where you just drove into town and into town park and camped- no lottery or anything. No land rush a week ahead of time.
Strange to think of isn't it!

Walking down Colorado Ave. and seeing Peter Rowan sitting at an outdoor cafe wearing a tee shirt, then seeing him sing in a huge sombrero later, and he had magic in his voice.

Lot of heartfelt emotion in that song.  Craig's first Father's Day without his Dad, Sam's second, my 21st without Daddy.  All of you who still have your daddys, give 'em a big hug and a kiss and tell 'em you love them, cuz some day, you won't be able to.  I hope that day is a long way off.

That was incredible!  I had a lump in my throat the whole time.  It was such a beautiful evening and the song paired with it really brought some tears.  So special looking around and seeing how moved people were.

I can still see Adam's fingers moving on the neck of his banjo at about 4a.m. Monday morning when I was sitting right next to him at Camp Billy.  Bobby was certainly in rare form too!
Earlier the "Psycho Killer" into .......??into .....???into.......?? and back into psycho killer at the old sheepherder tent near Maple Al with Page et.al was hysterical, including the "My penis is big and round like a futon, your penis is small like a crouton"  rap and all that preceeded it. (Cuz that one pretty much ended it) I wish we had THAT on video. OMG that was funny  It can never be duplicated, and those are the magical moments.  And who ARE those guys who did that?
Around 6a.m. Monday seeing/hearing Anders and Pete strolling through camp, dobro and guitar playing a very soft "dueling banjos" at various tents.  And Evan following behind with his pal Jim Beam.  absolutely hilarious.
Bloody Marys with AB and 2 of the RRE guys and their buddies at daybreak on Sunday.  Jalapeno olives and umbrellas in the cups.  Fun stuff happens when you don't go to bed and are still up at daybreak!
Venus and Mercury shining in the sky just before dawn, and the birds starting to sing around that time.

2)Camp Get Enough Wednesday post Rumballs w/Goddess, Rabbit (Gipper), JudgeMental, Honey, Scott, Chris, Norm, Mike & Kimmy from Breck, Mike from Georgetown, and last but certainly not least my new friend Valerie...playing the music name game A to Z too many laughs, too much fun   

3)Sunday at Elks Park w/Crooked Still & Friends AMAZING performance especially at the end with Sara & Sean Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Abigail Washburn, & others when the entire audience rose in unison and started hopping/dancing/smiling during the last song. The energy was high octane at that point

4)Running into Bela just upstream of Baked in Tride, acknowledging each other and Mr. Fleck remarking, "Great tshirt!" (my favorite festival shirt, the Jerry skeleton holding banjo Peak to Peak Batik by Eric, my avatar) and i'm thinking to myself, what a beautiful Sunday in the most beautiful mountain town, it's Father's Day, reflecting on the phenomenal TBF camping/festivating, having just witnessed #3, and having one of my musical heroes make that comment kinda sent shivers up and down my spine for a few moments...

5) John McNair (ck spelling?) and his assemblage of all things glittery, the descriptions of each bag, and the perfect timing of it all...

6)Meeting new friends such as  Pete and Jessica, Valerie, Marian, Beru, Rich from Tempe, Hammon, Amber, Leslie Ann, JudgeMental, Stavros, Mike from Breck, Lindsay from Breck, J McNair, too many others and reacquainting with those whom i've met before; Generally the camping vibe of TownPark, this being only my second year back in the "circus" i still have a kid in a candystore mentality

7) RailRoad Earth anytime, anywhere....Sam set...David Byrne set, Jerry Douglas throughout the festival, the Elvis C. set..thanks Planet for another eclectic, acoustic styling week of music...

8) Rabbit (aka Gipper) accompanying me out of TP Camp most mornings and visiting with local resident Mark O'Dell, one of the nicer people you'll meet and his 2 Berners Blazer and Cheyenne...beautiful, happy, child like pups with huge paws, those dogs made the trek in flops into the city well worth it, the coffee not to boot...

Here's my fave momory..  

Friday nite, after the (awesome) Yonder Sheridan late nite (about 3am)....

I was hobbling back down Colorado Ave toward camp when out walks Jeff Austin and his girlfriend... After asking me where I was headed, Jeff pulls out his cell phone and starts making calls, lookin for a ride for me. After he couldn't reach anyone, he runs out into the street after a police car, yelling "Officer, officer, can you give my friend April a ride back to Town Park?" Then having him lovingly tuck my skirt up so he didn't close it in the door. Wowzers, what a sweetheart!!! ~ THEN, he came up to me at Greensky the next nite and asked if I made it home okay lastnite.. 

Needless to say, I was floored!!!! I mean I've always really dug Yonder, but now I have a whole new respect for them (or at least Jeff)

After closing my mouth from the jaw dropping beauty and surviving my first gondola ride, the immediate warm welcome Brian (Useless) and I (Jo) received at the Smugglers birthday party.  The fun continued with our introductory visit and tour to Town Park by the ever smiling Hooch and lovely Flagstaff Jess. 

We have never met such a wonderful group of people....from the Town Parkers to the folks waiting in line with me for the next artist 'Meet and Greet', to the beer/food vendors and the ever changing gonola pod people we met as kept up our travels over the mountain.

The Festival, the music, people, food, and surroundings all lived up to the hype we had anticipated for those long six months preceeding our trek to Telluride.  We look forward to the next chance we have to participate and enjoy!
