TBF 101 for families

We too are driving with our two kids from SoCal!! Where are you coming from?

We're coming from Irvine!  How about yourselves??  When are you leaving??

We are leaving Ventura on the Sunday before TBF and rolling in on Tuesday morning.  We did the drive in two days last year but figured it is easier on the kids to do it over three days. We are staying at Warner, how about you?

We're either leaving Monday or really earrrrly Tuesday (and spending a really long day in the car) to get there Wed morning.  We're staying at the High School, so our camp doesn't open till 8am Wed. 

How old are your kids?  Did they have a good time last year??

We have two girls, 6 and 3.  We were at Warner last year too and they had a blast. The nice thing about being at Warner is that we were close to the playground and the pool, plus we could hear music from our campsite.  I had a blast listening to Peter Rowan's set last year while the girls played on the playground.  I am sure you already know this, but our festival motto is..."if the kids aren't happy, nobody is happy!" The other thing you have to check out with the kids is the Telluride Library.  They have an amazing childrens reading area and it can be a nice break from all the craziness. My girls also loved riding the free gondola up to Mtn Village.  They thought it was like a  Disneyland ride.

We also have 2 children coming with us - if we decide to go - When does one need to leave main festival ground/town park to return their own campground. Is there a cut off limit for staying in town park - I just assume that is where the jam circles will be and not @ the high school so would want to stay some after the show ends for jammin. Any insight?

Hi Linda You can enter Town Park anytime before fest. But Thursday-Sunday TP and Warner are off limits unless you are camping there and have the proper wrist band.
 Folks from Warner can visit Town Park during fest with the warner wrist band.

I bet there will be jammin' everywhere, at all camps, just about.
So take a tally and see who at the HS camping is into it.

I think the more kids the better.  We've had great experiences with our kids, just 3 and 21 mo, in Town Park.  (Except for the illness and sheet / blanket washing last year but hey.  Pam is wonderful for letting us use her washer.)

lots of toys that can get dirty and then rinsed.  a tub big enough to fit them in along with a solar shower you can fill then wash them with at the end of the day.

ear plugs for sure, as has been said.  we've found the best are the orange  ball/silicone/soft rubbery ones you can get from sportsmans warehouse / target in the swimming or hunting aisle.  these are the kind you have to roll into a ball and then press/form into their ears.  but once they are in they stick really well and are less intrusive than the ones you shove into the ear canal.  I'm actually always surprised by the number of kids I see inside that dont have any ear protection & also by the number of comments we get about what our kids have in/that they actually have anything in.  at least use something.

inside the festival anything from ice melting, which is expensive inside so bring your own, to a small tent that can fit inside your sunshade, if you are among the Kelty throngs in the back, is fun for the kids inside.   the waaaaaaaa balloons are funny for the first few seconds.  then you notice everybody looks at those people and thinks, hahahahah, enough yet?

remember to use sunscreen every few hours.  wear hats.   that a nice stroll along the river outside the fest where you can still hear the music is pretty nice and a place you can run crazy without running into people, but still lots of bugs.

the hammock by the primitive bridge in TP is real nice for a nap, but always occupied darn it.

We're having a flashlight decorating party this week. And getting together fun bags for the 15 hour car ride with three kids!!!!! Are we nuts? It's within striking distance!

Cool!  I hear ya with that car ride!  Ugh.  I think we may leave a day earlier than we originally planned.  That long in a car for one day would drive ANYONE crazy  , let alone 2-3 kids.

Heather, I took another listen to the s/t album and it's really not as bad as I thought.  In fact, my daughter was rather enjoying it.  She told me to put Get-Well-Cards on her mix (she has her own playlist on imeem.com).  So, thanks a lot for sharing your liking for it!  Otherwise, I may not have gone back to it.   


Also, when is the Family Tent Sched coming out?!??!  I wanted to make the laminated schedule lanyards (like the TP folks are doing), but with the main stage sched on one side and the family tent sched on the other.

I am wondering what people are cooking. I am a huge cook and am afraid to be eating junky pre-packed stuff all week. Tends to make me feel terrible. Any good ideas?

Well, I am nowhere near a huge cook, and have zero ideas on what to eat.  My husband's the expert camper cook.  But I imagine we'll be bringing lots of canned beans, hot dogs, burgers, and the like.  Haha.  But if anyone has a better idea, I'd like to hear it.  What do you guys normally bring?  TPers have an incredible schedule of daily activities mostly including food.  We should get the HS campground hoppin' too.  Haha.  What do you think?

Hey Resist waves, Love your idea of lanyards. I am going to work on that. . .I could see how it would be hard to keep track of the shows/events without them.
As for food, I have never been camping before (yikes) and my husband has basically told me that everything I think will be "easy" is actually mind-blowingly difficult without easy trash, sinks and three kids running around. Maybe there is a co-op in town that would be friendly to someone who doesn't eat dairy or bread. Off to do more research and organizing my staging area.
