But it also doesn't create good festivarian vibes when people leave unattended chairs all night and show up just in time to get a number when everyone is following the rules and staying in line all night.  That just makes everyone else in line who followed the rules mad.  So regardless, one side is going to get a little riled.  And if you are trying to cheat the system you deserve to have your chair thrown out of line even if that makes you mad.  Although you would have no one to blame but yourself.

"Smokey, this isn't 'Nam.  This is bowling.  There are rules!"

I support this sentiment.

We're Festivarians, not cops.

If the line is going to take on the responsibility for policing the line...

This sounds great so long as it is for all people and _ALL_ rules.

If you are going to enforce anything, start with the people who are SLEEPING IN LINE and then deal with the rest.  Are you going to personally ensure everybody stays awake all night, every night?  Or is this just a,  this is great for the first night, but not the last few nights once people get tired?

What about the people who sleep in line?

Don't go enforcing arbitrary rules because you think they don't/do apply to you and no one else.

Don't think you are the first ones to try and enact something.  Don't think you are the first ones to think you have come up with the answer.  Apply it to everyone for _ALL_ the rules is all I am saying.

What about the people who sleep in line?  what happens then?  Are you going to wake them up and ensure they stay awake till the numbers come around at $;30, 5:00, 6:00, or even as late as 7:00?

what about the people who are gone from before last set till 2:00am?  They are ok but the people who are gone from 2am-4:30am are not?

What about the people who sleep in line?

What if someone is gone from midnight-thirty till 3am for nightgrass?  are they ok because someone in some chair, somewhere, vouches for them?

What about the people who sleep in line?

The line has always been an organic thing, accepting & bemoaning the line practices that exist.  That has always been one of the the great atmospheres of the line.

How do you think the Telluride Tanning Society started?

What about the people SLEEPING in line that STILL get their numbers?

This is not something that has just come up overnight, folks.  this is something that has been ongoing for decades.  The whole, don't get in line till the last act finishes was only something in the last few years.   Anyone remember the older woman who carried her chairs out to her side and blocked people from going around her just because she wanted everyone else to wait?  What about people got in line for the next day before the first act even started?  the line has advanced over the years, for sure.  Line stories are great because of the line and the things that happen in it

What about the people who sleep in line?

The line is ________________THE LINE______________.

Get in it.  Sit Down.  Hold on tight (if you aren't sleeping) and wait till the sun rises up over Black Bear Pass.  then have a drink and celebrate with the people who are actually awake to see it.  If you don't like it, then get there earlier.

This isn't the first time at the rodeo for most people.

Yes THE LINE.....*sigh*...every blasted year this happens.....

There is no sleeping in line according to the "rules" and all I have seen is people complain about the people who aren't there.

What about the people who sleep in line?

Yes, I show up.  Yes, I stay awake (with the help of my friends and their adult beverages).  Yes, I get a number I am almost always happy with (well except my kids want numbers now too).  Yes, I get my spot or pretty darn close to it.  Yes, I do wander around to check out the late night pickin'.

Don't you?

& perhaps that is also the point I raise.

Don't you get your spot?  Or is it that you are 2 tarps over and 1 tarp down from where you want to be?  Think about it.

Do the chairs affect your spot or just your sense of fairness?

It sounds pretty authoritarian in here.

I do actually realize (even tho it doesn't seem like it) that everyone has the best intentions  I'd love to be able to get out there at 4.30 to get in line and not see empty chairs.  But more than that, I would like people not to get out there at 5:00 and 'sneak' into a high spot because someone is SLEEPING IN LINE.

Who will be the first one to pull the trigger?  I am sure as #@$@# not a narc, are you?  as the Capt'n said "We're Festivarians, not cops."  Nor do I think we want to be cast in that light.

Talk.  discuss.  Suggest, even.  But don't go around and touch people's things without a pretty freaking good darn reason.  And that reason sure as heck fire is not that they have been gone for an hour or so, when your friends and your seats were empty at some other time you deemed acceptable.

What are you going to do, then, for the people sleeping in line?

Yes, I have been in the front of the line and I have been at the end of the line and NO ONE follows all the rules.  Not even Claire.  (Can't wait to see you Claire!)  NO ONE.

So the people who sleep in line are ok but the people who get up and go check out the late night picking are not?

anyhow.  I hope to see lots of you in line.

I will be there.

I will try my best to keep you awake.

There is NO sleeping in line.

If it wasn't for TRADITION we would do things in the Town Park line like we do at Folks and Rocky.  Show up, get your random number, and oh well it was random and good thing we had 50 people in our camp instead of only 5 so we could get lots of numbers instead of putting in our time and getting where we sat.

Or is it only because this is TBF that people have an issue?

</rant, poor grammar/punctuation, are we really going over the line, yet AGAIN off/>

and as a side note.

I love the line.

As it is.

I love the people who sleep and jump 10 feet out of their sleeping bags when someone comes up and scares them.  I love the Anahuac (sp?) that happens that a lot of people don't know about because they are sleeping or gone.  I love the conversations I have at 4 in the morning when people want to go to sleep but are waiting for their replacements even though lots of people don't get them.  I love the middle of the night kickball games the last few years that suddenly erupt from the people who are still there and awake.  I love when Rick, Dave, Todd, Timmay, Shawn, others, and the Porta Potty Crew (hopefully they will be here this year) come out to play music for people.  I love when the number guy comes out and gives people their numbers and then kicks people who are sleeping to give them their number.  I even love when the number guy comes out to give the numbers but someone (I wont mention names) suggests they go back to his truck for other indulgements first and they forget about us in line.  I love running the @#$@# out of the bathroom to get to my chair because someone yelled out 'NUMB3RS!!!!!!'  I love drunken horseshoes to stay awake.  I love the sunrise.  I love all those people who are still awake and have the big bags under their eyes because they are still there.  I could give a shoot about the other people who aren't there because I am.  And so are you.  Why don't you love it too?

I love the line people simply because they are out there.  Even the sleeping ones that I try to wake up.

What about the people who sleep in line?

What about the people who sleep in line?

What about the people who sleep in line?

You know, I think this is totally the people in Warner Fields fault.  There was never an issue till they started putting people in there.

Yes.  I love Festivarians, so long as she doesn't piss on my tent and then try to deny it which is another story for another time, and I do LOVE the LINE.

Long live the line.  Hopefully it can stay a TBF line instead of a RG or Folks line which are really not as much fun.

*dang when is my pager going to stop waking me up in the middle of the night and making me a curmudgeon*

Festival, people, Festival.

Really, isn't there a better idea? A lottery each day to distribute numbered cards perhaps?
And the extra money could even benefit a cause.

The present system makes for a line that renews itself almost immediately. Literally, two to three hours after admission each morning the line regenerates, while the artists perform.
I'm sure that no one would miss the Tradition.

This could be a significant improvement for so many, many, reasons.

Way to open up that can of worms, Bevin.

But I still like your idea.  I just don't want to write a long essay about it.

Give me the tarp line, or give me death!!!

Yeah I was definitely verbose to a fault for sure.  Sorry about that peeps!

If only I had thought of, "Give me the tarp line, or give me death!!" instead.  I smell a sticker or t-shirt there.

Wave Can't someone just make up some flyers or signs stating that if you leave your chair for more than an hour your chair gets tossed? And if you are asleep when the line moves you are not guarenteed the spot you were in? I think the physically moving of someone's stuff is a bit touchy and gets folks pretty rilled up when it happens. Not a very Festivarian vibe. All this is of course from someone who has only been to TBF once and only spent perhaps a total of 5 to 6 hours a day for two days in line! Take it for what it's worth.
I'd be happy to be the line monitor if someone can come up with the following;
A 4 day pass, a place to sleep, transportation from St. Louis and back!
I would even throw in my Hollandaise making services as well as bacon cooking and shuttling of beers/flank steak sandwiches to tarps.
I know, I know, I'm a giver! LOL
