I have a goal of backpacking during the following week and am trying figure out logistics and places to go.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Well... I don't know if you were looking for backpacking suggestions, but if I were you I'd look really closely at spending some time up in the Chicago Basin.  Heck, how cool is this... a train ride to the trailhead (Durango to Silverton line), easy access to 3 14'ers (Windom - 14,082', Sunlight - 14,059', and Eolus - 14,083') , and the bonus of incredible late June wildflowers!  Yep... that would be my first choice.  javascript:replaceText('%20:thumbsup',%20document.forms.postmodify.message);

Hi Joe!!!  Been on a tramp lately?   :hop   Rollin

In case others were as confused as me...
Rhonny threw me for a loop with her question earlier today, and had me pondering all of the different connotations (mostly negative) for "tramp."  With clarification from her about the verbiage, I can now answer what was meant as an innocent-inside-joke question between the two of us.  In fact, I can answer with confidence!

No - I haven't been on a trampoline, naked or otherwise, since Big Chill Weekend.

Thanks Joe!  I didn't want to risk offending someone by suggesting some other than the innocent version of "tramp."   :hop

And can I just say that it was an  Medal honor  Medal to be the sole witness to the first "session" on the tramp!!

That's the route I was thinking. Thanks for the confirmation. Hopefully, after 5 or 6 days of acclimation I'll be ready for the altitude ...assuming my liver is still in tact!!  Drunk

Hey, PG, were doing a wilderness pack prior to TBF and it is my first time to be in the San Juans. We are heading up into the Weminuche on the 14th to the continental divide via the Highland Mary Lakes trails.

Knowfun suggested the Chicago Basin, but it is my understanding that it starts to get crowded there in late June and there is a ban on open fires. Just things to consider when picking out your area.

So I've finally figure out the forum and worked up the courage to say 'ello :)

A buddy and I will be driving down from Seattle for our very first festival extravaganza and I'm already having trouble focusing on work due to excitement.

We will be spending a few days in Utah on our way down hiking and such and are camping way on out at Mary E. during the festival.  I'm guessing that all the pre-show fun in Town Park is only accessible to those camping there?  Otherwise we are all about the wandering fun and would love to bring yummy goodness and sparkling personality to all of you folks who sound like yer planning quite the party.  If parties are restricted campground folks only I guess we will just have drum up the fun at Mary E. - either way I'm ready to have a great time and meet great peeps.

Anyway thanks for pulling us lurkers out - can't wait

Great to see yer post!  You can get into Town Park campground up to tuesday or wednesday before the festival begins.  Telluride Tom might clarify this for me.  When it get's closer to Festival Time, print-off the Town Park schedule of activities and bring it with you to Telluride, and you will be able to join us for most of the events even though you're camping miles away... bring your bikes to ride in and out of town!  Cheers!

You can join in the fun in Town Park up until the day the festival starts. As long as you're just walking in and not carrying camping gear, they won't bother you.
On the bike situation.... There's no bike trial all the way out to Mary E. and the road is narrow and treacherous (especially at night) so I'd try to work on an alternate method to get from there to Town Park before fest.

So we were thinking of bringing bikes and using the car to get closer to town - we don't have a car permit for Mary E. anyway so bike might be handy to get to where ever the car gets parked (out on the road I assume).

Is it possible to drive closer to town and then use bikes to get around during the day?

Since the shuttles won't be running until the festival starts, you can probably find a place to park near Society Turn and ride your bikes on the trail from there. If you try to come into town, they may turn you around without a special permit, but even if they don't the parking is expensive!
