A Daptone revue in the old style with performers coming and going to a James Hunter 6 as backing band. Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones, etc. taking turns at vocals. File under big change of pace, next to Janelle Monae.

I just saw Sturgill Simpson last weekend in Boston.  He and his band were fantastic and I think they'd play very well in Telluride.  His band even has horn players in it. Remember how great horns sounded in David Byrne's epic performance in 2009?

John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band is really good!  My hopelessly optimistic suggestion of the day is Bob Weir. The type of the music he's playing now fits well with our festival.  His new album Blue Mountain is surprisingly good and the tapes I've heard of his recent short tour are fantastic.

I MAY have mentioned this before.....in all my years of listening to music I have never heard a voice as pure as Alison Krauss. She has never toured Australia and despite travelling over the Pacific numerous times I have never heard her live. Please, please bring Alison and Union Station to Telluride. It would make me the happiest ever. I would pretty much offer to shout the bar...ah now that will test you folk, what on earth does " shout the bar" mean?

I had never heard of Poi Dog before seeing them at the 1992 fest (my first Telluride), and have been a huge fan since. They are amazing live. Saw them in Chicago about '95--one of the best dhows I've ever seen. At the Vic Theater--no AC on an August night when it was about 90 degrees. It was a Sunday night; the 4th night of the run, after the first three sold out immediately.  They played an amazing two hours and left the stage sweating and exhausted, but feeding off the audience (we were all dripping with sweat). I think they all needed to change into dry clothes and drink a gallon of water). It took literally at least 15 minutes before the came back for the encore; the crowd going wild. 
When they came back they did an hour long encore set. It was one of the coolest and most impressive things I've ever seen. A sow I'll never forget.
Would love to see them them in Telluride again.

I remember Ferg mentioning Dwight Yoakum in a conversation we had many many years ago but he's never been to Telluride.
I'd go for that one. Burbank and Telluride.

There seems to be an unsatisfied yearning for some Dead music at Telluride, and I'm not talking about the occasional cover here or there.  Assuming that we could not get the new Bob Weir incarnation, there are some other options.  Keller Williams played one of his Grateful Grass sets in Denver last weekend, this time backed up by the Stringdusters.  It was one of the most joyous, danceable sets of bluegrass that I've heard.  The Dusters have a genuine feel for the Dead.  I know that the McCoury boys have been doing a similar thing on tour with the Jeff Austin Band.  Here's a link to Keller's set for those of you who are interested:

Billy Strings is gonna be top of mind for all of us in 5 years. The guy is ridiculous!!
