I have had reasonable luck standing outside of the venue looking for tickets. I think they day of the show, plans often change and people are tired, or want to participate in some of the many other fantastic things going on any given night.

Yes, this is true. Last year I walked into the box office of the Sheridan and asked them if they had any extra tix left for the Friday yonder show and they said they had "a few" and let me and some other friends into the show.

There are way more possibilities in Town Park and Telluride than there are online.

What are the chances for getting Night Grass tickets the day of the show?....This is my first year and didn't realize that I had to preorder...

Go to the Tickets to Buy and Sell link and you will be directed to people looking to sell all kinds of Night Grass tickets.  I have some Yonder Conference Center, Leftovers and Stringdusters available.  PM me if you are interested.

It can be done, but some shows will be easier to get into than others. I've bought and sold tickets in front of the venues before.
