Thoughts on Yonder Mountain String Band

Younder is like Flank Steak a Fest tradition.

Confession.  I'm a meat-eater, and I find the Flank Steaks to be completely vile.

What's wrong with me?

I've only had them a few times, and I don't think they're vile, but I also wasn't too impressed. Also, when did my status switch to !!!BACON!!!?

Just saw the ISD Sunday night in Vegas after the Phil & Friends shows ... only caught about 1:20 (was tired), but it was very good.  While yonder might not be "pure bluegrass", I couldn't help but observe that the strring dusters don't always stick to bluegrass renditions & get into their own brand of jams just as well.

i love those dumplings a lot more than i like YMSB, however, i would rate it like this:

1. asian dumplings
2. YMSB
3. Flank steak

I just can't understand the Yonder hate I've seen here the last few weeks. Do they make you smile?  Do they make you want to dance?  Then what's the problem?  If they don't, someone else does. Life is good!

Comparing bands as completely different as Yonder and the Dusters is apples and oranges.  I love them both, and will continue to see each as many times as I can.

There are only two kinds of music, good and bad. We are so lucky as festivarians to be able to listen to so much good music, maybe we get a little spoiled. Enjoy the bounty Planet Bluegrass provides for us, share it with others, and have a great day!

I truly believe that none of this forum banter comes from anywhere near a "hateful" place,  but I agree with the rest of Doc Mike's perceptions that both bands are great, and I will see them whenever I am able.
Festivaaaaal! 

p.s. Just when will we get another Dusting here in 'Sota?

Holy crap, Jeff Austin quit the band today:

Yonder Mountain String Band is all about family, and through the support of our family of fans, we have been able to play music for you for the past 15 years. We couldn’t be more proud about our successes and experiences performing at the best venues and festivals in the country, and for the most dedicated fans any band could ever wish to have. With this said, YMSB would like to share some news about the future of the band. Collectively, after long, heartfelt discussions, we’ve all decided to move forth with a newly formed line-up due to varying career goals and creative pursuits. As of today, all future YMSB shows will be performed with Adam Aijala (guitar, vocals), Ben Kaufmann (bass, vocals), and David Johnston (banjo, vocals). We will welcome exciting special guests throughout the rest of the year and we look forward to a new permanent line-up in 2015. YMSB fully supports Jeff Austin and his emerging solo career.
Yonder Mountain String Band will perform all scheduled dates throughout 2014 with the new line up and special guests. Jeff Austin will be announcing more dates for his solo endeavors in the coming months. The band wants the fans to know that this decision did not come easily, and we’ll certainly keep all of our fans up to date with the new Yonder band-member line-up information.
We greatly look forward to seeing everyone out on the road this Summer and Fall!

I had been hearing rumors for a while that their most recent tour would be their last. Honestly, I'm shocked the band is planning on continuing on without him. He's been working on a bunch of solo projects recently, so I'm surprised he's decided to move in that direction. I am surprised that Adam and Ben have decided to keep Yonder going. I always figured the two of them would go off and do some type of collaborative thing while Jeff formed his own band and Dave waited by his phone for the call to reform Yonder (sorry, Dave). I'm absolutely shocked.

I give it a year before Yonder disbands and goes the route of Salmon. They'll do their own thing for a few years, then they'll start doing 2-4 reunion shows a year at big festivals, then they'll come back full force and show a whole new generation what they were about.

I was at the last show of their tour, which now is the second to last show with the original lineup. Weird to think about.
