First, no one is preventing die hard fans of any band from obtaining tickets.  Pretty sure tickets were made available to everyone, everywhere at the same time regardless of musical presuasion. 

Demand has been really, really high for the festival the past few years, even before preliminary line up was posted (WF 2011 anyone?).  Waiting to announce the full line up allows those who were shut out (ie TP/WF lotteries, those who didn't realize 4 days would go almost immediately) some shread of an attempt to secure tickets before the other half of America is searching after an announcement like a M&S or (god forbid) Phish is made.  I think PBG is attempting, in a very egalitarian way, to reward those festival goers who are there for the WHOLE thing, not just a single set by a single band that happens to have a very large following, without excluding anyone from being able to buy tickets now.

I can't speak for the Planet, obviously, but I think you've kind of answered your own question. So, would hard core SCI fans normally come to Telluride wihtout the presence of SCI? Sounds like no.

Would the average die-hard loyal festivarian likely return every year? Well, that's clearly a yes because of the presence of many of the same acts (Sammy, Yonder, Jerry, etc), their friends, tradition, etc.

So, closing the loop then, does the Planet want to reward those who come every year regardless of one band or does it want to reward those who come for only one band? Pretty easy answer to that...Of course, this also assumes that the Planet has purposefully waited before announcing the last two big acts. I don't know if they did but if they did, fine by me.

Hearing more and more talk that SCI is confirmed for the Festival. Believe the hype people! 

I am also hearing that 1 maybe 2 nightgrass shows are likely in the works. So the naysayers can help guess the other TBA act, whom I'm going to guess is Mumford & Sons.

I am still very confused why PBG would wait until all tickets are sold out to annouce the remaining headliners? Especially like SCI who not only has extensive history with Telluride and the festival, but also a lot of Colorado history. I don't feel it is going to prevent the ticketless from trying to attend because it is going to make more ticketless SCI fans. Although I don't think the ticketless will cause that many problems, as obviously they didn't show up for the heated Phish appearance in Telluride, I do feel by preventing the diehard SCI fans from obtaining tickets is going to likely cause some backlash for how the ticket sales were done this year.

the way you have put forth your argument makes it seem as though you believe PB should hold tickets or somehow reserve tickets for a select group of fans of one band. your logic, as it applies to PB, is fundamentally flawed. We bought our passes without knowing what bands were playing. some were obvious, others not. if sci fans wanted to attend the festival, or take a chance that sci was indeed playing, they had the same chance to purchase passes and single day tickets as every one else. as i said on another topic, passes are not hard to acquire, if one uses a little creativity. the closer summer gets, the easier they are to find. we got 4 day passes, mary e camping, vehicle pass and all our night grass tickets and wednesday  yonder in mid may. and all for face value. most sci fans are very resourceful when it comes to getting into cheese shows, the cheese kids that want to travel to telluride for the shows will find a way to get in.

I like the discussion created here and I appreciate your perspectives. Don't get me wrong here, I am not just trying to stir the pot. I am attempting to have an active discussion on a board of interested parties...

I also have attended the festival in years past, so I get how steeped in tradition it is. I like the fact that something running this long has that aspect of tradition. However, I get the feeling that because you've attended the festival previously (no matter if it is for all 40 or just for 1 or 2) and decide to attend every year regardless, somehow some of you seem entitled to obtaining tickets or entitled to certain aspects of the festival. Futhermore, that entitlement is a disincentive for "newbies" to attend the festival.

It is not illogical to think that a band with a robust following would make tickets, albeit a very limited number of tickets, available to that following no matter where they are playing or who is "running the show."

The problem with that is that Telluride isn't about just one band. Telluride is about the experience. I was and still am very pleased with the way the Planet handled tickets this year. Telluride is bigger than SCI or Phish or any band with a following and the Planet understands that. The tickets were all made available to everyone at the same time. No one was given preferential treatment. If SCI fans or Phish fans or Metallica fans or whoever wanted to come, they had the same chance as everyone else to get their tickets. Telluride is about the experience, so it makes sense to me that the tickets made available to people who wanted to have that experience instead of announcing a huge act and then selling the tickets to people who only want to see that one act.
