Town Park virgin? Get your answers here!

Don't know about your lodging, but if you are staying in your airport town that last Monday evening, you might find less expensive hotel optins in Grand Junction.

Ditto on the supplies being more available in Grand Junction (Clifton) and Montrose.

Hey all,
I'm 29 and traveling up by my lonesome. Looking to make some friends and have a nice relaxing weekend away from the Valley and busy people, and cars... oh and heat.

Anywhooo, I'm not only a TBF virgin but I've never been to a festival before. I've wanted to attend TBF for years though, so finally I am pulling the trigger. Unfortunately I didn't do it in time to get a spot at Town Park. My question is will I still be able to hang out with anyone after hours and experience some mountain community? Or will I be escorted back to the high school campground to camp in silence. I actually have lots of studying to do so it wouldn't be the worst case.

Also, are there a lot/ some people like me out there? 20 somethings 30 somethings ... Who migrate for a weekend of getaway?

Lastly, does anyone want to run/ hike some trails?

I'm sure most of these questions seems like amateur hour, but I basically am in that group.

Pearl,
There is no rest in Town Park.  Never been to the High School or Lawson, but am sure they are more quite.  I stayed at Mary E. my first year.  Met some great new friends, and was quite comfy there.  It is a bit of a ride on the shuttle (20 to 40 mins each way, depending upon time), but Mary E. is a much better camping environment (in my opinion), than the fields at the High school and Lawson.
You'll find plenty of 20-30 yo's to hang out with, and you might even find some pretty cool 50 - 60's out there too!
I think the 20-30 crowd are mostly banjo players, before they later discover the finer sound of the mando!
As for night grass, those go out on a lottery when they are ready, don't panic, just pay attention to PB, and they will announce when the lottery is open.  The tickets will go quickly, then the trading begins.

If you get into town before the festival starts you can come visit us in Town Park.
Once the festival starts nobody can enter a camping area without the appropriate wrist band.
So, I can't visit people at the high school, Lawson, or Mary E either because I have a Town Park wristband.

I'm sure you'll meet plenty of like minded 20 or 30 somethings to hang out and party with.
Just buy someone a beer at the beer tent and start talking.

So glad you have pulled the trigger! Never fear my new friend, there is something always goin on wherever u r camped or Condo'ed(?).... and age is something undefined at fest, you will see. Generations all dancing to the same beat, one of the most beautiful things about this fest. Family, kinship, inclusion. You are the party my girl, BRING IT!

As for your rookie ass, you sure picked THE BEST festival to attend to make it your first!  This festival is unlike any other... in ways one can only experience in person!   

As for your question(s):

A: Town Park Camping opens up the Saturday/Sunday before the festival so is there are a host of events building up to Thursday... Goddess Walk, Rum Balls, Pot Luck, New Years, PickJam, Canny Cup..  All of which can be accessed throughout the week leading to Thursday.  However, once the Festival starts - Planet Bluegrass enforce wrist band rules during the festival and shortly after the festival up to a certain time..   That being said, you can still get limited access to Town Park - as others mentioned before, Town Park never sleeps.

Regardless, you will be treated with 100% kindness and respect by whoever you engage with - so we all encourage you to say hello!.....The more you put in, the more you'll get out!

A: You'll meet people. Period.  There is no age discrimination and you'll see all ages mingling together.. And people come in from all over the world for this...  its the best place on earth.

Tarp size?  We have a crew of 8.  What size should we bring for that?

There used to be a limit on tarp size, but the limit was dropped some years ago and the festival field becomes one huge tarp collage with soft borders anyway.

So lay out 8 festival-compliant low-back chairs in your yard, draw a square around them, and get a tarp that big.  Or, if you get a bigger tarp, prepare to share your tarp space according to the Festivarian way and the Planet Bluegrass guidelines: "In the spirit of Festivarianism, if you see an empty tarp, feel free to have a seat until the owner returns."  http://www.bluegrass.com/telluride/rules.html 

You can also buy a tarp at the True Value Hardware store in town if you guessed wrong and brought one that's too small.

Pearl, you already have several fest friends that have responded here, and I can tell you none of us are in the 20 to 30 range. Just come and be open to new friends. You are going to get a kick out of all the little/short Festivarrians too. They are just the best kids you'll find anywhere on the planet.

Greeting Telluride lovers! I'm way late to the festivities, but my hope is to drive across the country from Asheville, North Carolina in order to attend my very first Telluride Bluegrass Festival. I'm looking for 2 town park passes and hoping to camp with some exceptional folks in Camp Howdy. I'm a special ed teacher and my last day of work is Monday, June 15th. My boyfriend and I would jump in the car directly after work and start making the journey westward. Please help guide this newbie in the right direction. I live, breathe, and love me some bluegrass and would enjoy becoming part of this glorious bluegrass family.
