How COLD and HOT does it get??

I live in Southern California and it's already 110+ here.  Doesn't get much cooler at night.  I treid to buy some warm clothes today and let me tell ya.. it wasn't easy trying to find winter clothes in this heat.  People looked at me like I was crazy!

I ran into a guy who has lived in Telluride for 30 years and has gone to the festival many of times.   He said some leggings a long sleeve shirt and a jacket will be enough. 

I'll have a backpack for more layers to put on through out the night.

What is your advice?

Whatever you need to stay warm for many hours when it's in the 40's, or maybe 30's.  And maybe snowing.

A TBF local needs 50% the clothes you do.

NO!! I live in Tucson....... YOU NEED the warmest clothes you can find... A really good ski jacket with fleece underneath then have on the leggings with the long sleeve shirt.. HAT and GLOVES and warm socks. During the day although the air temp may say only 70 or 80  you will get hot in the sun- dress like you would for 110...  Bring sunhat and light weight clothes, sunglasses and sunscreen... Be ready for everything in between 20 with snow and 100 and bright sunshine.. Serioulsy... I know you know what to do for the warm BUT really be readu for the COLD.. It does get COLD when the sun drops and it can snow...... It did last year on Sunday!

Especially if you are camping - it can feel A LOT colder than it is!! If you are in Town Park, it's warmer the further from the waterfall you are......

It gets so hot that popcorn pops right before it freezes. Expect cold freezing rain and suntan weather both.

 Long underwear, swimsuit,  warm shoes, sandals, ski hat, sun hat, fleece jacket, hooded windbreaker, UMBRELLA, and a very warm sleeping bag.

If you have a waterproof jacket/coat, hat, and gloves, you should be fine.  The key to Telluride is "Be Prepared" for anything.

Check Telluride Tom's weather prediction...something like highs in the 90s and lows in the 40s.  A 50 degree spread is accurate, and the temperature drops right as the sun goes down.  Depending upon where you're camping, you may have to bring all of your layers with you, or you can go back to camp and change between sets around dinner time.

The official Festivarian Color is Purple.  As in, "When your sunburn gets a touch of hypothermia, you turn a lovely shade of purple."

For warm clothes, check REI or their online site or REI Outlet (online also).   Left Lane Sports is another good online retailer with low prices, 6pm.com, Sierra Trading Post also have good discounts and close-outs.  A wool layer is also great.  You could probably find a nice wool sweater at a thrift shop.  Wool is very warm, but it also breathes well and doesn't get stinky, even with several days of wear.  Last year was our first festival, and we could have used long underwear and warmer jackets.  We learned that it's better to come prepared and not wear everything than to be unprepared and be cold.

Related warning from personal experience:  Wear sunscreen, but watch the eyes!  I got sunscreen in my eye last year and made about 10 visits to the first aid tent for 2 days for eye washes before my eye finally stopped stinging and streaming tears.  Not fun!

I will tell you from personal experience, and our 1st festival experience- 18 yrs or so ago, the biggest mistake you can make is not to be prepared for the COLD and WET... Desert dwellers tend to underestimate how cold it could possibly be since we are dying of the heat... It gets colder than you can imagine and then double that...LOL

If you're talking about the lady with the camera taking all the pictures, that was me. I have seen snow before, just not in Telluride, or on the Summer Solstice!

Actually Mel we woke to snow the morning AFTER fest cuz we had to pack up and load out in it.  Sunday it was rainy most of the day. I remember because I was trying to get my bed out of the lake that had formed in the bottom of my tent. I slept in my car that last night, after nightgrass when I came out around 2 and had to brush all the snow off of it so I could drive back to camp. When I saw all the snow on my tent I said to myself, self, screw this, go sleep in your car! That load out was NOT fun.

Well, no...but on the bright side there was significantly less sap to scrub off everything this year

I'm afraid this one is going to be another dustbowl year.  One of those years we start dumping water around camp to keep the dust down.  Let's hope it's not a super breezy one...my eyes can't take it!
