I will never forget Howlin' At The Moon TBF 2015.

That tiny crescent moon, low in the horizon, with a couple of real planets in view, all done in perfect weather.

It was one of the greatest music moments of my life. His whole set was mind blowing for me-1st time seeing him play live!

Not so surprisingly, I needed to be sure after that moment that it wasn't just the surroundings that made that moment so great.

Finally/luckily, last week I finally realized that Sam made that TBF 2015 moment great!! 

Traveled to Kent State and took a couple of videos and some audio and am back home a week later I am still totally convinced that he might just be my new Jerry. I'm completely blown away by him and his band.

He didn't play Howlin this time, but that didn't matter. His last 2 songs of the night were 15 mins each! When You Gonna Wake Up and Same Old River!!

Sam has always been my Jerry, so to speak. If I had to chose my three favorite musicians of all time, Sam would top the list with Jerry and Zappa rounding it out. I actually found Bluegrass and Sam Bush before I found Jerry and The Grateful Dead. In fact, it was Sam who turned me on to Bluegrass and set the strings in motion for me to find my way to The Dead. If you haven't yet, I highly recommend looking for some New Grass Revival recordings. Audience recordings can be difficult to come by, but they really show what Sam and the boys were about.

Should I just buy a best of compilation(Amazon) or a particular cd? = Too many choices and I don't need to own everything right away. Anything a must have?

I rarely ever recommend a best of as I believe albums should be listened to in their entirety. That being said, "Grass Roots: The Best of New Grass Revival" is an incredible two disc set. It takes you on a journey through their entire career. It starts out with a cover of "Great Balls of Fire" which is also the first track on New Grass's first album.

I'll also make what I consider to be a safe assumption and assume that you are a fan of live music. New Grass Revival's live album titled "Live" is also a must have.

As for studio albums, the studio album I listen to most is probably "When the Storm is Over." This was before Bela and Pat Flynn joined the band, but it includes several of my favorite songs, such the title track and "Sail To Australia."

I usually avoid any of the albums with drums on them (i.e. "Friday Night in America" and "Hold to a Dream"), as I don't think New Grass worked with drums. Granted, if they had had a drummer as talented as Chris Brown, I'd probably feel differently. Instead, they only ever had Nashville session drummers who thought they were playing country and really didn't understand how to play bluegrass. The songs were always incredible when played live without the drums, but I'm not a fan of those albums.

As an added bonus, if you're a fan of Leon Russell, check out his live album titled "The Live Album." New Grass Revival was his backing band for a few years and plays on that one.

the live one, is that from 7/10/89?
that very same night i was at giants stadium seeing the GD
no wonder i missed this new grass thing!
anyways that cd is $12 on amazon used so i'm all over that one if it's the one
think i will work those 2 up for some serious spins before moving on

it's more curiosity than anything right now
usually i prefer new music cause there's so much of it
but every so often i check back to see what i missed
and especially dive in if i'm going to see them play ie) sam bush
