We are looking at places to stay (hotel) if we don't camp, is Ridgway too far to drive back and forth each day?

Not really, if you want to got that option. One long time Town Park camper lives in Ridgeway and works in Telluride, so he makes the drive almost every day. The big issue is driving and festivating don't mix. I wouldn't want to drive those roads at night after a long day at Festival. Besides, so much fun happens in Telluride at night! Camping is the way to go, in my opinion.

Plus, as a friend of mine just pointed out to me, you'd have to park in Mountain Village and ride the gondola to and from the fest.

No, but you really don't want to do that. Trust us, camping, finding a place in town or Mountain Village are your three best options.  Thumbs Up
