Must I join the stampede?

I notice in the pictures of past shows that there are people running (and falling) with blankets and chairs at the opening of the gates.

Why? Must I? Are tickets oversold? Is there not enough room for all?

To add some context to the question:
I have never been to one of these festivals before and I am happy sitting farther away from the speakers as long as I can hear what is being played. Some shade would be nice since my cancer doctor has said "No more sun".

They will not be oversold. Traditionally what happens is each night starting at midnight or after,they randomly give out tickets for entry the following day. People  lineup about an hour or so before midnight but even if you are the first person in line it doesn't mean you will be the first person in the next day. The tickets are given out randomly and you won't know what your number is until you look. The person in front of you might get a three and you a 150. Luck of the draw!! Then the next morning everyone lines up based on the number you have and then the gate opens and you enter by number. Once through the gate, all bets are off and if number 10 is faster  than numbers 1-9 he will probably put his blanket up closer or in the limited shade or wherever he wants. After all the numbered people go in everyone else then gets to go in and take whatever space is less. Even if you didn't stand in line at midnight you will still be able to see and hear everything but you will be further back.

So, If I don't get a number and stroll in after the stampede, will I be able to set up a small tarp on short poles to sit under? I was thinking this would keep me out of the sun and if I set it up near the back I shouldn't block anyone's view.

Is it OK to set up a shade tarp in the back?

If I stroll in after the stampede, will there be room to do so?
