Title: just writing
Post by: bouzouki on February 07, 2009, 09:06:41 AM
I write until my notebook is almost full, then I start another notebook.  Sometimes I know what I intend to write about and sometimes I don't have a clue.  sometimes I have one line, or sometimes a page is full and I go on until there is nothing more to write.  It is similar to some chronic mental condition, like an obsession.  Sometimes what I write is clear and makes sense, and other times I have no idea what I thought when I wrote.  I have no idea why I write, if it is to honor the Muse or just amuse myself, is it aimed toward someone(?) or just my yelling at the universe.   I think that once the muse is invoked, and your dues are first paid, it's like a membership to an ongoing association, there are more dues, and in my case, the requirement to write is never completed.  The strange thing is that as I explore my inner world, there is still something to write, and it does not have to make sense to anyone else, but I have to write.             bouzouki

Man I really wish i thought about music that way.... The mathematician in me translates everything into patterns and sequences, etc....

When I write music, it seems to always be more a matter of "what if I applied this sequence of notes with my right hand on top of this chord pattern on my left hand.... hmm that sounds cool, but now lets move this finger up and down between iterations... hmm, that sounds cool too. How about we move that over to this part of the neck... gah, that sounds awful.. back down over there"

And eventually I'll find something that sounds cool, and then I'll figure out by listening to it where it moves next.

Then again, maybe what I do is not so different, almost stream of conscious instrumentally I suppose... it starts of as random nonsense, and eventually gets refined into something more complex. In that vein, my songs usually follow a winding path rather than any sort of verse chorus bridge format.

And while I'm not necessarily aware of or directly influenced by my muse/inspiration, what I'm feeling/experiencing ultimately contributes to what "sounds good" to me at any given time. That being said, I'm a big fan of minor chords and dissonance... perhaps that says a thing or two about myself.

So just one more note on this train of thought,,,, David Grisman plays open chords alot, I am listening to him today as a study. I think my style is turing out to be more of a somba based rythm. Whatever I play seems to have this latin thing goin... I have asked my friend Hoyt (mandolin) to help me fix this :lol

Funny you should say that! The other day I started playing Steam Powered Aeroplane as a Bossa Nova tune. Thats when I knew it was time for bed :)

Hearing that Bob Dylan had made songs up by piecing together lines from unused material, Joni Mitchell was inspired to do the same.
She sang
"In a day or two I'll be laying you. Odds...."

it is not plagerism it is the anxiety of influence. All of that "stuff" that is wandering around in our heads comes out. I have a line in a song "wherever I am, I am what is missing" which I wrote 20 years ago and read the same line in a Ted Hughs poem, 10 years after I had written it but from a book written the same year. Maybe we were channeling. It happens.

Wow I discovered Tim Obrien's forum by chance yesterday, what a great forum.......

If you like to write get over to his site and read about Tim and how he developed his terrific skills.

Tims writing is great and his voice, to me, is comforting, like a fathers. Strong, soft, steady.......

You got a link?

No truer words will ever be spoken.

what good is a song if no one sings it...maybe it should be me

You should definitely play/sing them. If you have an iphone or ipod touch, there's a cool little app called "Four Track" that allows you to do all kinds of awesomely ridiculous stuff while recording things you wrote. Give it a try!

:-)

This makes me remember our "school trip" to Kennywood every year in Pittsburgh when I was growing up. Back then all the rides took varying numbers of tickets that you carried around. I remember when I'd receive my tickets all rolled up and it just felt like "potential."

I open the drawer upstairs that has my town park tickets, night grass tickets, and Rocky Grass tickets. It just feels like "potential."

Super excited.

I remember going to Riverview in Chgo. every summer. It was thrilling and we all looked forward to it for weeks. Squirming in our seats in the car, crazy good fun. One summer my sister said, why are you not excited . Your always excited to go to Riverview(huge Amusment Pk). I told her i was but I was mature now and just didn't show it as much. Now TBF is something I can get excited about and keep getting excited about and I must say I have a huge smile on my face right now and my excitment is more then I can maintain. Now show us the goods, give us a tease, some art, you fart. :lol

Dang it feels like it should be Friday already. Music makes the world better! In every way.

Some day when I retire I would love to start a museum that holds every known instrument in the world. Interactive so you can hear each one and the history of origin.
I remember when I first saw Exaver Rudd play the widgery stick. WOW!!!!!!!!!  I always see , hear and learn something new on the TBF stage. Bela is so good for unusual sounds  :medal Spell check is needed I am quite sure on this post. Sorry :lol

We spring forward soon and it just gives me ants in my pants for Summer and Fest! :flower

:wave I just read that BW from the Dead walked off stage during a solo set because the crowd was chatty. :medal

My Nana taught me when I was young that it is inpolite to chat through a performance.

Now that I am grown, I can see a have little tolerance for folks who demand my attention and chat in my ear through an entire perfomance. :rolleyes

I do indeed remove myself as well. Fest is difficult to filter out the chatter and unreasonale to expect that everyone remain attentive for 4 days but I do think it is very supportive to show whom ever is on stage pouring out their heart, to be attentive to a certain degree.

It takes courage to be on a stage no matter who you are and what amount of time you have been doing it. I salute the folks that share themselves with us :medal BRAVO! You have my attention!

I use to run through people like water through sand and then one day I had to take my stand no one gets in and no one gets out i feel like a ragdoll getting tossed about. I keep tellin myself that someday I will see that the enite planet is not flanked with debris I feel my heart pound I stand here free but no one can see me. A million people in my sea of doubt all moving so quickly and not taking time out, no one gets in no one gets out. I use to run through people like water through sand and then one day I made my stand if you cant look me in the eye then keep walkin, if you cant sing with me then stop talkin.

Finding common ground. Song writing. I use to think how revealing to write from my heart and would become shy about sharing my personal thoughts. But now...

It takes courage to show yourself through word. Raw thought, personal, unfiltered, rambling of love and life. Straight from the heart of the matter.

It just takes one person to have the courage to share in word to link many others together.
We are all human and that is a wonderful common ground. :flower

Writing today and this Forum has helped me grow. LOVE THAT! :lovedr :rock

 :medal :medal :medal

The courage to write a Love letter and give to one person is huge, but think of giving it to the world. :eek Courage, it takes courage to show yourself and I love it now. Freeing. :medal  writing, everyone should learn to write.

Words can heal and hurt. But they only have as much power as you yourself give them.
Hate
Fag
Love
Kiss
Joy
Spatula
 :lol
but in reality they are only words and you are the master mixer that gives them meaning.

A vanilla world. Soon folks will have absolutly zero tolerance for anything socially incorrect. At the very least it confirms your own beliefs on what is correct, ethically, worldy. But freedom of speech is extreamly important and I would rather someone spill out profanity and socially incorrect lines then talk in a safe scripted way over and over again. Big Brother and now it has seeped into the general public. I say wake up, someone has to shake the tree and jolt you out of your smooth unaffected skate through life. Wakeup and think and talk and tell me even if it hurts to listen!!!!!!!!!!! I love everyone.

I have been thinking about collaborations. I am a solo writer but I think it would be very interesting to infuse my ideas with someone else's. What do you suppose the more unusual pair up would be. I was shocked to hear Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash would write together.

:thumbsupThrown like a star in my vast sleep
I'm opening my eyes to take a peep
To find that I was by the sea
Gazing with tranquility

'Twas then when the hurdy gurdy man
Came singing songs of love
Then when the hurdy gurdy man
Came singing songs of love

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang

Histories of ages past
Unenlightened shadows cast
Down through all eternity
The crying of humanity

'Tis then when the hurdy gurdy man
Comes singing songs of love
Then when the hurdy gurdy man
Comes singing songs of love

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy hurdy gurd
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang

Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang
Here comes the roly-poly man
He's singing songs of love
Roly poly, roly poly, roly poly poly he sang
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang
Roly poly, roly poly, roly poly poly he sang

Amen, sister.

Miki I have only seen Rhonda Vincent once play a live show, and it was in Durango. It was a number of years ago, but she definitely played Colorado at least once that I know of. We got to chat a bit after the show and she was very friendly and open to answering questions.

I know that most of what I say is irrelavent in some ways but need to spread the love of music in many different ways.

I don't know about "irrelevant," I just looked and this thread has 69,059 views. It seems like a lot of people are finding the time to check in with you and see what kind of joy you're spreading.  :)

[M]usic and art have absolutely no boundries. Free to weave in and out of traditional lines and rules. To reach out and explore the edges of your own creativity is like flying. To let go and show emotion, paint it, sing it, play it. Wow life is just so incredible.
...
Sing! Paint! Write! Reach!

Well said!

These are the modes we use to communicate those aspects of the human experience for which words will always be insufficient.

heheheheh...He said, "Mode."

"Inspiration, move me brightly. light the song with sense and color;
Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask.
Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last.
Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to terrapin."

This old man was graceful with silver in his smile
He smoked a briar pipe and he walked four country miles
Singing songs of shady sisters and old time liberty
Songs of love and songs of death and songs to set men free

The moon pulls and tugs, a nudge a tease...that crazy moon how it inspires some to love to create. Powerful that moon. I wonder how many songs were created on a full moon?

that river that river she calls my name
she took my house and shes to blame
took my land and tossed it about
now Im good as new and there no doubt

The rivers in charge and she calls my name
were gonna be just fine but not the same
Gonna give her room and some to spare
going to put my house wayyyyyy up there

:wave When I think about everything the folks in Lyons had to go through and PBG ranch I am so proud of all of you. The spirit of community is alive and well in Lyons and if Craig wants to fall to his knees and cry when they plug in for the first time at the ranch I think many of us will be joining him. We all know and appreciate the efforts to keep the Fest on track. Greatful and so happy to be connected in a small way.

Your love turns me around
it lifts me up just to let me down
Your love is just like a hurricane

First I'm in and then I'm out
you spin me around and then you spit me out
Your love feels just like a hurricane

Just like a hurricane just like a hurricane

That's OK no need to shout
I know your in some terrible doubt
But all I know is this feels
just like a hurricane

I don't know what up or down
all I know is we keep going
around and round this sure feels like a hurricane :flower

The English language is only so big. After writing a song called Hurricane, I now see that that word is used many times over and over again in love songs. We are all human and have the same range of emotions, so we conclude and arrange and draw from the same sources. Hurricane, Your love feels just like a hurricane. My use...interesting! EXPRESS YOURSELF!

Song School.......tools...... I need that.....soon :flower

It makes plagiarism hard to define.

The sound of the river is knockin at my door
pulling me in, begging for more
I want to walk away but I hear that roar
of that mighty river, opening the door
A splash and kick a trickle or 2
I have to hang my feet in the river for just a few. :flower

Neil Young. It is time :medal He is a man with purpose and his lyrics are so true and few. Man he just knocks my socks off. His writing is just outstanding and direct and simple. Like Dylan to me. :medal

RGA today!!!!!!!!!!! Lucky ducks.

If I were there I would ask Sarah, Claire and  Frank S. to write a song about guns. This topic is so hot and controversial. I know Frank and I disagree as well. I would love to be in  good company and skilled song writing. Gosh I feel as if I should be there just to jab Frank on that topic. :cheers Controversy spars intellect :medal.

Smokin Mandolin player and song writer as well.

It is going to be an amazing week at RGA!  :medal

The Blues and Bluegrass...heres the thing, when you write words you can send them to any genera. I wrote a Blues tune and then recorded it and after review, it sounds much better as a Bluegrass song. Words, my songs just words and the genre changes from Folk to Blues to Bluegrass.

Yikes! :lol

my sister whom I have not shared time with in a long while will be here to visit with her beautiful husband and I was thinking how wonderful to share with her some of the more important things in my life in just 1 short week. I want to bring her to Sunday Folk fest. It is the most perfect way for me to share. I hope there are 3 Sunday tickets. She plays the guitar and I know she will be so inspired by all of you. :medal

I must say after review of the lineup it is hard to just pick one day for me. :medal :medal

The most beautiful thing about a song, is it holds memories.

My sister and I have not seen each other in years and last night we sang songs from our youth and each song held a memory and would make us tear.

So many memories locked in a song.

I am finishing a song this morning and trying to create a bridge and it sounds really pretty. I can see I have improved and even though I do not get to dedicate myself fully to this craft it is very rewarding to see myself grow and still want to explore the craft of music, I am reminded however slight today that people can be very critical about the smallest detail and I am still learning how to ingest that, hold that. feel that and be ok with it. Not just ok, unaffected and cool still being able to deliver. I think a thick skin is required to be in front of a crowd of people.

Still workin on that one....

Be a beacon of truth, love and understanding take the hand of life and together we are standing if it not for me and it not for you whats left nothin to do. do we just lay down and die without a cry, accept the guns the beheaded ones. Give me faith in mankind and love that's blind till it hurts and you say forever more. I choose life, and love and acceptance.

It was heartbreaking to see the President cry and this is so symbolic of how many feel...

I think if were not careful this will become yet another good ol boys network. Keep your mind open to the new always. A ridged stance never serves anyone. Love and friendship, music and dance, pretty simple.....the tarp , a small component to a huge picture.....wrap your head around acceptance. People are free thinkers and will always devise a way to make thing more enjoyable.

:wave I read this yesterday somewhere I forgot. But it has resinated with me. "The song supersedes the singer". It is very true, People like Joe Cocker, anyone really that has just an average voice can and do make it very big, not because they sound great but they deliver the message great! Writing songs may seem silly or trite to some but songs are for eternity and bring so much time stamp to everything. I am proud to be a writer and would love to indulge myself more. The message supersedes ..

Any one remember Lenny? A tragically hip Comidian that was Socially incorrect and abrasive but spilled his guts on stage every night. His passion was to just, let it out, get it out, what ever it was that he was feeling and thinking. This can be considered by some, not Art at all and by some including me I consider it to be one of the highest forms of art. Giving expression and feeling injecting you with thoughts and possibilities good and bad. You are the filter of which the final meaning is determined. This is Art and it does not have to be Socially correct ever.
Freedom to express, a free range thinker. :medal

Wow I just saw pics of the new stage in Telluride. It is huge! How are you ever going to fill that backdrop? Inquiring minds want to know.

I saw a great great backdrop idea from Warren Haynes. A very light textured crumbled cloth grey. Didn't look like much till the lights danced on it. It was beautiful. Looked like mountains at times.
It would be cool to have pine trees on rollers so you could reduce the stage or open it up. Big space to fill with just Art. Can we have a peek at the Art yet?

Is it me or is the stage bigger now?

I got this Ferg. LOL! I have no idea why I think of these things. :lol

I just heard this great new young band and I thought I saw their name in one of the lineups so before I blurt out their names I'm gonna check...harmonies are off the wall.

I know what it was. Did you have a CD release party for SHEL? Their vocals are so nice. Not Bluegrass but really nice and young and fresh and new. Score.

I have a few tips for Fest. Things that make me cringe.

Babies in front of speakers. If your liver is bouncing around to the beat and you have ear phones on your baby that's great however step back from the front for your babies sake earphones and all.

Pets in bags and under things. It is so hot, loud and so many people and the dogs look so afraid. Please do your buddy a favor and let em be a dog, Fest is not for dogs.

Full circle. I have come full circle . My First fest I was scooped up from work thrown in a car and landed in Tride no money(not enough anyway) and  no ticket. But almost each year I would return with ticket on hand.
Now I am getting older and think this may be my last Fest in Tride and I have everything in place but a ticket. I gave it away cause I had no sleeping space secured.

I may end up in Tride once again with no ticket. Full circle.

THE most memorable set EVER in all those years of attendance

JOHNNY CASH UN FLIPPIN REAL. THE BOMB. :medal I can still see him the way he mastered that stage. Drew me in like a magnet .

Sway like a willow, sway. I am trying not to plan too much cause time is like now in the moment for me but thinking about my first move down the hill by gondola is gonna be a challenge. A Taxi with my gear each morning would be crazy easy  :medal. A chair, rain gear camel pack squirt gun sm tarp umbrella. couch, sink. Jerry you got that covered?

In the moment, chubby and does not give a hoot, tipsy and churning out some killer tunes of which I could barely understand. And I want more. So real it offended some. No Girl Scout that is for sure but man she left her mark on me, My favorite girlfriend was a girl who never cleaned and could care less who stopped by. You always felt welcome and the other stuff just floated away. Her ability to not care was just so natural and comforting to know she was so real and unaffected by others.... :medal

You go Elle!

Lay me down easy
when it's my time to go
take all of my burdens
soften the blow
lay me down easy
lay me down real slow
when it's my time Lord

I was singing and writing the other day and thought, gee my voice has changed an octive since the new 420 Law was passed. LOL!
Then I was diving into some Bob Dylan and thinking, his voice was never ever epic in any way. It is the way he expresses his song and the writing that make him epic.

I got this. :lol :medal

It's 24/7 365
gonna sleep with this mask
till the day I die
Give me a dollar or give me a day
a choice I need to make
do I go, do I stay

A mask for every breath that I am in the sun
a task I have to do till this hex is undone
give me a dollar or give me a day
do I go, do I stay

the birds know its Spring
and so do I as
the world spins n days fly by
time is on our side
if we can stay in place
not for you not for me
but the human race

2021? It's a date
gonna take 2020 to resonate
roll the past Fests around
zoom in on Jerry
watch em git down
miss my friends and hugs
especially the hugs
Like 10,000 love bugs
 soon but not soon enough
PBG gonna crank it up
make me turn it over, like a ? :lol.
warming me  up
I will be here waiting and watching
till the leaves fall and  the grass turns gold
I think then it will be safe
to gather share and partake.

Hugs

Live streams gives you a glance into the Artist as a person not just a figure. Jerry Douglas speaks of his concerns, so touched to be connected on a more personal level with these faces I have seen year after year, summer after summer. They feel like kin and it is a great pleasure to get to know them on a more personal level.

We have a common thread you and me
a common thread one you can't see
it holds us together, like paper and glue
A push for better days for me and you
It's a soft vibration a low hum
been here for centuries
will never be undone
a common thread between you and me
a common thread one you can't see
it holds us together like paper and glue
a push for better days for me and you
steppin' up together one foot at a time
dancin' in the streets and workin overtime
progress is slow and way overdue
were pushin for better days for me and you

this covid thing has reinforced in all of us a need for togetherness... a common thread. Playing with word this early morn.
Rolling around in bed and song keeps creepin in my head, a full moon tradition for me.

Mandolin did an amazing job at capturing the feel as well as the music. Epic.

Yeah DB insulted women. Last I heard the real rock stars have fans of all ages through decades so saying it is creepy to have fans in  their 60's is arrogant and insulting and I stand by that. Not a good thing to say period.

It was fun and it was nice to see everyone together singing and dancing.

I turn 66 today and fans of all ages matter. Insulting indeedy.

Bluegrass is getting so progressive that it is becoming harder to define as Bluegrass. Newgrass? Progressive Bluegrass? So wide and I love all of it. I just turned someone on to a bunch of new stuff and they were like, that is not what I thought it would be. A variation of. Like seeing pasta but tasting cake.
